You sniff the air hungrily. It smelled awful to a god, but to you - it was delicious.
You were on the right track.Jumping from house to house, you unfurl your bat like wings made from the nightmares of phantoms themselves and soar through the air, towards the ever growing scent of a storm.
"Chichi." You call to your small, catlike companion, who purred a feline response. He was a small little thing, with a cat face, barn owl wings and a dragon-like tail, but with the eyes of a tiger and the soul of a lazy dog; he was a mint green with dark blue wings, but two black stripes on his back making him look more like an overweight toaster than anything.
He dove out of the sky and landed with an inelegant thump on a roof; it was lucky he had silent flight, or he would've been eaten by now. You chuckle and land on a high rooftop, tucking in behind a chimney. "Chichi, are you seeing this?" You say excitedly to the small phantom cat, and he mews in response. It was one of the biggest storms of phantoms you had ever seen; swirling and black in mass - a huge, undead column of misery. Your eyes light up with hungry fire as you stuff Chichi in a small patch in your hoodie, before taking off at full speed.
"You'd have to be careful, as there may be many gods trying to tackle the storm as well," You think to yourself, and feel your companion squirm to get comfortable as you fly.
The scent grows stronger as you reach the edge of the storm, and you fly up to the very peak of it.
You look down upon the swirling black mass which was your prey. You soar upwards towards the edge of the Earth, but bank, flipping over gracefully, tucking your wings into your body and dive like a peregrine falcon. You catch as many phantoms as you can on your way down the death drop, diving into the storm enveloping the city. Chichi separates from you, joining the drop with his claws outstretched, waiting for the inevitable, unsuspecting fellow phantom to crash and be caged in his iron grip.
The scent of death and madness overwhelmed your senses with a craving for the beings spreading darkness to the human race.
A sudden jerk in your vision indicated your companion had caught something, and you swoop down further to the ground, trying to find something bigger to prey on.
Then you see it.
A giant, yellow cobra phantom unfurls its folds like a huge flaming canopy, and hisses at you as you land in front of it - constricting tighter and tighter around a possessed human. It's human-like eyes go wild at your scent, and instantly let's go of the human and comes charging at you.
You flip over it, unfurl your wings and the small, thin but deadly sharp blades retract with a snick.
You look wildly over your shoulder, making brief eye contact and a crazed face, when you shoot backwards towards it, spinning and torpedoing through it.It explodes and you smile, your face shadowed by the tall, tall buildings of the city, but a silver glint glistening on your metal fangs.
You hear a noise to your left, and you swivel one of your catlike ears.
Chichi appears with a distressed phantom in his mouth, whilst it squirms and squeals in hope of escape.
He marches over to you proudly and you crouch down - retracting all of your phantom like features, turning into what seemed like a regular regalia.
"Good job, boy." You say, patting his head affectionately. He purrs.Abruptly, you hear a scream from the back alley of the building to your rear.
Instinctively, you run in the direction of the human scream, Chichi landing on your shoulder.
You turn a corner and see a brown haired human school girl pressed against the wall, a wolf regalia snarling and dribbling - it was mad.
Without thinking, you slam into the wolf, unfurling your wings and screeching - loud.
It cowered in front of you, and scampered off.
You give the girl a side look.
"Be careful, kid. You don't know what type of phantoms are really out there. Avoid the storm next time."
Her pink eyes shimmered in the light, and you see a tail pop out and twitch from behind her. You cock your head and she nods. Chichi yawns, and walks over to her, rubbing up against her leg.
"You smell like you've been around gods." You state. She nods again. "Please," you start, facing her completely, standing at your full height, turning your legs into wolf haunches, and your dragon tail with a blade barb shimmering in the city light," Don't tell any of the widely known gods I exist. It'll land me in big trouble." You laugh, smiling, friendly and warm. She smiles back. "Okay." She says. You offer her your scarred, animalistic hand. "Nice to meet 'ya. My name is Y/N."
"M-my name is Hiyori."
"Hiyori, huh?" You ponder the name. "Well, I better get going. Get out of the storm, there'll be more of those types of phantoms everywhere - especially in the shambles towards the south end of the city."
She nods gratefully. "Chichi." You call. He snaps to attention and jumps to your shoulder. He scrambles up, wrapping himself around the nape of your neck. "See 'ya around, Hiyori."
And with that, you take off and fly to the local park, leaving the girl to stare off confusedly after you.
You find your blossom tree.
It had beautiful purple, blue, white, pink and yellow blooms, and it towered tall above the rest of the trees in the park.
Beneath the tree was a gap in the roots that resembled an animal hole behind a large rhododendron bush.
You push it aside and climb in the dark hole, Chichi a step ahead.
Under the tree was a large room with earth walls and roots holding up the ceiling and walls. Plants trailed through the barriers against the soil, and wrapped around what had been a rock in a basket- fashion. However, you had removed the rock and put a rather large cushion inside it, so you could sleep comfortably. And with that, you made your way over to the natural bed and curled up - transforming into a human like form. Chichi snuggled up next to you, rolling over onto his back, and you fell asleep rubbing his stomach and listening to the peaceful stream opposite your stunning blossom tree.
