The Jobcentre Plus (it's Britain's welfare office chain) will allow/won't allow you to be signed on during the summer depending where you live. If you don't have a job.
You have to apply for universal credit, which is a monthly payment that you will receive on certain circumstance, depends on your age. After you apply, you have to wait for a couple of days for a phone call or receive a letter through the post for a appointment. Bring your documents like I.D., proof where you are living for the past 3 months and so on. After that, you have to wait 5-6 weeks to receive your first payment (waiting for your money for that length of time is ridiculous when you're a little low on money).
Here's a story (and a little rant) with my experience when I was applying for my benefits at the beginning of the summer. When I went to the Jobcentre, a woman that works there and whom I recognised (and greatly dislike. She's the one that I've mentioned some time ago) said that I had had to apply online, even though I was used to the paper documents. She had the gull to say to me: "You don't know how to use a computer?" What the actual fuck?! I wanted to punch her in the face, One Punch Man style. She had the audacity to say that to me thinking that I have the intelligence of a new born child or the IQ of a rock. I went back at her with a "you got to be shitting me/you're a fucking bitch" look, saying: "I know how to use a computer." And continued: "I just don't know how to apply to receive my benefits." I swear she thinks that she's all high and mighty and she's smarter than everyone who signs on. She is up her own ass for saying that. When I was going to college part-time, the same woman told me to sign off from the dole
She didn't stop and think if she said that to a computer technician who's been let go due a business going under and they would have a field day shouting at her. I just finished college for the summer and I have used a computer since I was seven. If me and her were up against each other to build a gaming PC, I would beat her with some of the knowledge of building it and finish at a short amount of time.
Believe me, a good number of people who work there are assholes. But there's some people who work there are nice if you're lucky enough. If you don't know how the welfare system works over in the UK, I highly recommend watching "I, Daniel Blake" and even search through YouTube and you can get other people's stories about their experiences with the DWP/Jobcentre Plus. Not everyone who goes to the Jobcentre is like the people on the tv that paints people who are the dole in a bad light.
