Started With a Tube - Chapter 4
The next morning I wake up with just enough time to shower, dress, then meet Grace for 'lunch'. I feel refreshed after my long sleep and as I walk to Grace's house, the cold air rushes into my face and my eyes feel wide open. The rain has washed away all of the dirt from the streets, and the city looks new again.
I'm looking forward to seeing Grace. I don't know why I'm not closer with her, because she's such a genuinely nice person. I guess since she's closer with Olivia and I'm closer to Jamie, it just doesn't make sense for us to be that friendly outside of school. However, I've decided that's going to change, because out of the three of them, I've decided Grace will take to the news of Alec the best.
That's if I actually decide to tell her about him.
I've been thinking about it and as much as I want to tell her, to get advice and see what she says... and okay, maybe to brag just a little bit, I just kind of want it to be mine and Alec's secret? Well, not secret, because that makes it all sound quite dodgy, but I just think it's between me and him, so why get other people involved? I don't know, I guess I'll just see how the conversation goes, and if it comes up then I'll tell her.
I walk up to her front door and ring the bell, only having to wait a short minute for her to appear at the other side. She swings the door open, grinning. "Hey, Cat! How are you?"
"I'm good thanks," I nod, her happy essence making me feel instantly better. "Are you ready to go?"
"Yep, let's go! I'm starving, I've barely eaten all day because I was at Liam's football game," she says, shutting the door behind us as we leave. Liam is her little brother. He's ten, and incredibly cute. Honestly, I can't help wanting to pinch his cheeks whenever I see him - scary, I know.
"And did they at least win?" I joke.
"No, that's the thing!" she says, laughing. "Their team lost by at least five goals. I swear, that's the last time I'm going to be getting up at nine just to take him!"
"When I was all snuggled up in bed," I tease.
"Shut up! You honestly don't know how jealous I am, I swear!"
"I can guess," I laugh. "So, how have your holidays been? Anything interesting happened?" She pauses slightly and I look at her, grinning. We're around the same height, my eyes reaching just below hers. "Oh my god, something has happened! Tell me?"
"I'll tell you when we get there, it's a long story." And she does. After we've settled down in a corner booth with our cheese and ham paninis, sipping our Diet Cokes, she spills the story.
"Okay, so you remember last year how I went out with Joseph?" she asks.
"Yeah?"
"Well... we've kind of started talking again," she says with a shrug, taking a bite of panini. I almost choke on my Diet Coke. This is huge, like huger than huge. Grace dated Joseph for three months, but had been friends for almost a year before. He goes to a different school, so I don't know him, but from what I've heard from Grace he's the best guy she's ever met.
But, of course, that's a complete lie. Well, lie is probably quite harsh, but close enough. She really likes him, and she can't see the worse side to him.
I mean, everyone has a bad side - his is just more visible.
Basically, when they went out last year, he continued talking to loads of other girls behind Grace's back, even after she said she wasn't happy about it. He eventually resorted to cheating on her, and she was crushed.
"And when you say 'talking'..." I say, pressing for her to elaborate.
"He wants to pick things up from where we left them last year." She looks down, a smile playing on her lips.
