Beep. Beep. Beep. All around me there was beeping. Where was I? What was I doing here? I opened my eyes to see Nathan fast asleep holding my hand with his head on the bed. I frowned. Why was he not in the bed with me? I moved my hand slightly which woke him up.
"I'm sorry." I croaked and he lent over and hugged me.
"Sorry? Sorry? Why are you sorry? If it wasn't for that drunk driver you wouldn't even be here!" He started raising his voice and I winced. His gaze softened. "Sorry. I'm so angry." I nodded softly. My eyes widened and I tried to sit up but whimpered at the pain.
"Woah. Woah. Easy." Nathan whispered.
"Where's Gem, Nath where is Gem?" He lost his gaze with me and looked away. "Nath!" I yelled at him and he took my hands.
"At the minute she's in surgery. One of her ribs have went into her lungs and she was struggling to breathe so they've had to take her into theatre because she was getting far too agitated." I sat back wincing.
"Same old Gemma. She didn't bite anyone did she?" I asked and he laughed shaking his head.A knock came at the door and in walked the doctor.
"Hello Lauren. I'm Doctor Ramirez. Glad to
See you're awake." I smiled at her. "Now do you know anything about your injuries?" I shook my head. "Right well you have bruised ribs, neck and right arm. Your left leg is broken in the femur and the ankle. Don't worry though we've done the operation already so there are screws in there to help the bone heal. You had a small bleed on the brain however, I don't think that's anything to worry about sometimes we just have to monitor them and they can go by themselves." I nodded. "Your leg will be in plaster for at least 12 weeks to help your leg heal. You'll be in the hospital for about another week and if everything goes well you could be out of here in less than a week." She walked over and checked the fluids that were going into me.Another knock came at the door and the door opened. Brooklyn walked in. It didn't look like he'd slept for ages. He saw me awake and came and gave me a hug. I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him.
"She's in theatre." He pulled back and looked at me. I nodded. "Nathan told me." I looked at the doctor. "Doctor Ramirez, can you tell me about Gem." She looked at me and sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm not supposed to but... when she came in she was in a bad way. The operation went well and she's in recovery now and I think she's out of the woods." I smiled at her and nodded. "Thank you." She smiled and left the room shutting the door behind her.A WEEK LATER.
The doctors let Gemma and I share a room. For this past week we were on bedrest so we weren't allowed to get up, which really irritated Gemma. Brooklyn made it easier for Gemma to stay put though.Brooklyn was laid on the hospital bed with Gemma's head laid on his chest. He was stroking her hair and I was just watching them and smiling. It's been a while since a guy has made her smile and look so content. She'd been hurt by so many guys and in such a short space of time she was comfortable with Brooklyn which I'd never seen in our years of friendship.
I yawned and closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep when I heard the door bang which startled me. Nathan was stood against the door and in his face I saw rage.
"The police came to talk with me about the crash. They aren't pressing charges." His fisted clenched and I sat up slightly and looked at him, begging him with my eyes to come over to me. Brooklyn shook his head and Gemma looked down.
"They aren't pressing charges because apparently they can't prove fuck all." He continued. I winced at the pain I felt in my side. I didn't know whether I was actually feeling a pain or it was a phantom pain I was feeling from reminiscing the crash. I stayed quiet."Maybe...maybe it's for the best you know? Court hearings and things wouldn't be good." Gemma chirped into the conversation Brooklyn and Nathan were having. "I mean look at us, we aren't exactly ready for any of that." She spoke looking at them both.
"Yeah but Gemma, he could've killed you." Brooklyn looked at her shocked she gave in, in the way she did. "But we didn't. We are getting out some point this week Brooklyn." She looked at him and shrugged.Suddenly I began to feel quite light headed. I just wanted to sleep. That's all I wanted to do. Why was it when we were all finally happy and sort of getting back to normal, something bad happens. I yawned and lay my head back but suddenly jolted forward. I screamed and clutched onto my side. Nathan jumped up and ran to my side.
"Someone get the nurse!" He yelled as Brooklyn was already halfway out the door.Gemma sat watching. She couldn't get up. I was aware that her breathing was getting heavier and her eyes widened. I knew she was having a panic attack but I couldn't help her. The pain began to get worse and I clutched onto Nathan's arm.
"Nath...my side." I cried and screamed at the same time. The nurse and doctor ran in. Brooklyn ran over to Gemma to try and calm her down.
"We need to take her to--" I didn't hear the end of the sentence because everything went black once again.GEMMA'S POV
What could I have done? She was in pain.. I couldn't help her. If I moved I would've torn a stitch or ripped the tube out of my chest out. I began to panic. I didn't know what to do. Lauren was screaming in pain and I didn't know what to do.
Brooklyn ran over to me and the medical staff ran over to Lauren pushing Nathan out the way which seemed to make her worse.
"Shhh. Breathe Gem.. breathe." Brooklyn whispered in my ear, stroking my hair and moving my head so I was nuzzled into his chest. I realised then he was trying to protect me from seeing what was going on. He continued to stroke my hair but the panic remained."We need to take her to--she's crashed get her to theatre now!!" The doctor shouted as they wheeled Lauren out of the room. Nathan stood there arms by his side staring at the door in which they had just wheeled Lauren out.
"I can't loose her." He kept looking at the door frame.
"Neither can I." I spoke as I began to calm down. "Neither can I."
