They were all set to ride, every Harry had a broom, all except the real one, who rode in Hagrid's motor-broom sidecar. Ruby was confused.
"Wouldn't that give you away?" she asked Hagrid.
"That's why I asked you to tail us, to ensure they wouldn't notice," he replied merrily. Ruby looked at Harry, who just gave her a wary look as he strapped himself in. She hopped onto her broomstick and revved it up, having her wand tucked firmly into her boot.
"Head for the Burrows!" Moody said, "We'll rendezvous there. On the count of three!"
"Hold on tight, Harry," Hagrid said.
They all lined up in two rows, most had brooms, Kingsley had a motorcycle, and Bill had a pegasus. Ruby definitely had to question him about that.
"One! Two! Three!" Ruby was off first, leading the charge and quickly being followed by Fred and George... she thought. Hagrid revved up his engine and made a mad dash right towards Moody, taking off just seconds before he could conk him over the head.
Ruby jetted up into the night sky, elevation climbing higher and higher until she was just over the clouds. Below her, she could spot Hagrid's motor-broom. She also saw Moody flying passed in what she could only describe as a bicycle with wings.
Up ahead, she spotted flashes of lightning, only it was a tad different than the usual type. It reacted in the same way dust would when being blown off a counter, flying in every direction. Ruby had a sinking feeling in her gut.
"Ruby! Scout the ahead!" Hagrid called to her.
"Aye aye, sir!" she raced over the billowing clouds, and to confirm her sinking feeling, she saw the silhouettes of the Death Eaters quickly coming their way.
"I count thirteen bogeys approaching, best to keep below the clouds!" she told Hagrid, "I can spot you from up here!"
"Ruby! Be careful!" Harry said. Ruby nodded to him as Hagrid began to make his descent, just as the Death Eaters shot through the clouds.
It was the brightest and most colourful game of chicken fight Ruby had ever witnessed; it were as though somebody had poked a hornets' next with a stick and the hornets weren't too pleased. Hagrid dove down low beneath the clouds, but two of the Death Eaters followed closely on their tail. Ruby dove down after them.
Hagrid's motor-broom jumped into the evening rush hour, gliding right along the white line that separated the two lanes. The Death Eaters were hot their tail. Ruby whipped out her wand and cast a spell at the first one;
"Alarte ascendare!" the Death Eater was suddenly hoisted into the air and thrown off his broom stick. Hagrid was thrown off the highway and took the next exit, which then brought him to two stalled double decker busses.
"Hold on, Harry!" he then looped into the tunnel and was driving on the ceiling, while Harry hung helplessly like a tooth about to fall out. Ruby couldn't squeeze through, she wouldn't be able to catch up with them, so she went over the overpass instead. The other Death Eater was right behind her, casting spells at every opportunity he had. Ruby felt like she was in the middle of an extreme game of whack-a-mole. She gripped her wand and threw another spell at him.
"Stupefy!" he went flying back and was thrown off his broom.
Once she came to the other side, she was shocked to find Hagrid had been knocked unconscious, and Harry was manning control of the motor-broom. As if the situation couldn't have been any worse, another Death Eater was coming after them.
"Ruby! Help!" he called. Ruby tried to shoot at the broom rider, but he was just too fast for her. The more she revved the gas on her broom, the father away the target was becoming.
