Enough

The rain poured down, leaking in through a hole in the old thatched roof. That was a problem she would need to fix once the weather let up but until then her priority was to keep warm and stay alive. She tucked the rifle against the wall next to her as shiver wracked her body. Even though it was raining to hell and back, it wouldn't stop them from coming after her.

It was their world now. They clawing and groaning echoed in her head. She barely made it out alive. If it wasn't for the raining washing away the blood that remained on the ground, she never would have escaped. They weren't very coordinated in the downpour.

Reaching forward, she used a stick to stoke at the fire. It was something very small in the makeshift fireplace the rundown house had. It was the only way she could keep warm. Despite the danger of the smoke at the chimney giving away her position, she had to keep warm. Looking down at her fingers, she tried to remember the last time she had eaten.

Maybe she could have gotten warmer quicker had she recently ate. Food was hard to come by. She was lucky enough to come across a decent supply of water in the last town. Though when she thought about it, even that was beginning to lessen. Most of the water had already been drank and she was down to her last few bottles.

Even though she was still freezing, she pushed up from the wood floor, locating her backpack. Her small knife dug into her hip from the holster she stuck it in. The knife had been her brothers before...

Shaking her head, she dispelled the thought. He wouldn't want her to think about the past or the sadness. He would want her to live, to survive, to push through to end of this life.

If there ever was an end, that is.

Thankfully she had managed to keep a few empty jugs and bottles. Sitting them directly underneath the leaking roof, a smile ghosted on her face as the water dripped inside.

Maybe, just maybe she'd have enough water for another journey.
