(By popular demand, I bring you the conclusion of Area 51.)
It was eerie just how quiet the base was. They checked out the outside first. Most of the helicopters were dead or blown to pieces. Some kind of explosion happened nearby. Maybe something with an EMP. It was the only thing that made much sense.
"We can't put it off anymore," Nina said, standing outside of the only door they could find.
Roman whistled, pulling both Rodge and Kylie's attention. They both walked toward Nina and Roman staring at the door.
"This was all three of your decision. You can't back out now." Nina wanted to laugh in a way. Obviously Rodge had his heart set on finding gas or something outside of the huge building. Instead, they found nothing but skeleton's of the past.
"How much ammo do we have?" Rodge asked, glancing at both Nina and Roman.
Neither Rodge or Kylie were trusted enough for the live fire weapons. Kylie could basically run, she learned that pretty fast. Rodge could work a map and a knife fairly well. It was the reason he was next to Kylie at all times.
Roman shrugged off his bag checking the three guns they had. "Probably not enough. The shot gun has about five shells. The rifle has a full clip. The handgun has only two cases of bullets."
It was better than most of them expected, but if they came across a horde inside, it wouldn't be enough. In towns during their supply runs, live fire just brought more attention by the corpses. Stealth kills were much easier to get by unnoticed.
"I also have another suggestion. None of you are going to like it," Roman said, shrugging bag onto his back. He handed Nina the handgun, but she hesitated.
"Just what aren't we going like?" Her eyebrows were raised.
"I think we should split up. This building is huge, we'll never cover the entire place by nightfall together. We stand a bigger chance over checking top and bottom apart. At least in groups of twos." His explanation was sound, but Nina worried. Not for herself or the boys, but for Kylie.
Nina nodded Roman proceeded to explain that Kylie and Rodge needed to be split. Both Roman and Nina had the live fire, they could protect them. Nina wanted to watch over Kylie, but then she remembered the time Roman saved them all. If it hadn't been for him, Kylie would have died.
"I'll go with Rodge. I trust Roman to keep you safe, Kylie. Just don't wander off and listen to him." Kylie nodded, thankfully without protest.
"If you find any kind of map, try to keep it. Maybe we can figure out where we've been and haven't," Rodge said as I stood beside Nina.
Standing back, they allowed Roman to open the door. Of course it was lock, probably bolted shut from the inside. Raising the gun, Nina fired which made the door wheeze open.
"We'll go first," Roman said. Kylie was right behind him, looking as if she'd rather go last.
They each pulled out their solar powered flash lights as Roman disappeared into the darkness. Nina stepped in front of Rodge entering what appeared to be a long hallway. Roman and Kylie were disappearing around a corner as Rodge pulled the door closed.
Immediately they covered their nose. It was an overwhelming scent similar to what might have been in a school prinicipal office or a nurse's station. Though it was strong even worst than a hospital. Obviously there was no power which was the reason it was so dark. They kept along in the darkness only the thin ray of light from their flash lights as guides.
As the turned the corner, Nina realized the hall split off in two different directions. "They went left," Rodge whispered, his voice carrying in the silence.
