«Advice Columnists: How exactly do you write a fanfic?!»
The Question: @supermassiveblckhole: How do you write a great fanfiction? I've started plenty, but then I'll lose motivation, decide it stinks, and quit. How do you keep going?
The Answer: Trust me, I feel your pain. Half the time, I didn't even manage to start writing the story before discarding the idea altogether. But to write a fanfic, here's my advice: Just get started. I know, I know, the cliché of clichés. But it's right! Don't become overly concerned about creating the perfect name, title, image, and personality for your character. It takes time! So just start writing.
And already we've encountered a problem! How the heck do you start a fanfic? There's so many different ways, and you want it to be perfect. You want it to capture the reader's attention, ensnare them in the world you've created, make it so they insist you immediately update despite the fact you updated ten minutes ago. The trick to doing this? Don't fret. Seriously. Don't get caught up in creating this perfect opening scene. If you try to do this, the grand majority of the time you'll end up staring blankly at your screen, watching that same blinking cursor as you fall deeper and deeper into the depths of despair as you realize you have no idea how to start. None. Zip. Nada.
