"Grell? Grell, darling, where are you?" Madam Red's voice sang, ringing throughout the Phantomhive manor. Pausing at the top of the main stairs, she looked around desperately, before her eyes laid down on the two individuals before her.
"M-Mother?!" Grell gasped, backing away in horror. Next to her stood Sebastian, who stared up at Madam Red, his face turning red with mortification. The two of them let go of each other's hands, pulling away defensively. Cautiously, Grell stepped toward the base of the staircase, starting up it slowly as she approached her mother, terrified of all the awful things she would have to say about catching her with Sebastian. "Mother, this isn't what it looks like."
"My Lady, I can assure you that there is a very good explanation behind this situation." Sebastian added, standing still in his place as if he were stuck in cement. He looked to Grell, who stared back at him. Her green eyes filled with remorse, she knew they had to refrain from anyone knowing about their relationship, but now Madam Red had caught them red-handed. She mouthed an 'I love you,' to Sebastian, presuming that it would be the last chance she would ever get to tell him that.
Madam Red walked down the stairs, the clicking of her heels against each step being the only noise in the otherwise silent main room. She reached the last step, looking down at her daughter curiously. "Grell, Sebastian," She addressed with a sigh, "What's going on here?"
Sebastian walked up behind Grell, wrapping a protective arm around her fragile shoulders. "Madam Red, if you will, allow me to explain."
She nodded, staring at the butler and her daughter before her. "Alright, go ahead. I believe you have the right to."
Letting out a sigh of relief, Sebastian began his justification. "You see, all that Lady Grell wanted was to view the garden this afternoon. Of course, I felt it was necessary that I guided her through, almost like giving her a tour. We walked around the entire estate, and that was that. Nothing more, My Lady."
Scoffing, Grell turned to Sebastian. Her face was pained, her eyes broken. "Sebastian, it's useless now."
"Useless?" Madam Red asked, confused. "What... what's useless, what on earth is going on?"
Grell took Sebastian's hands in hers, holding them close. She leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. Tears flowed steadily down her cheeks as she refused to open her eyes again. Sebastian helplessly watched as she cried, brushing the flyaway strands of red hair out of Grell's face. "You're alright, you're alright," he soothed, attempting to comfort the weeping baroness. He wrapped his arms around her, cradling her as she sobbed even harder into his chest.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Sebastian." She wailed, trying to hide herself away from her mother by burying herself in the butler's chest.
"Grell, listen to me. It's not your fault," He consoled, rubbing a hand up and down her back. "It wasn't anybody's fault. We needed to be more careful with our actions."
Madam Red sucked in a breath to interject the scene between the two, before reviewing her reply in her head and deciding it was too judgmental and rude. She sighed as she watched Sebastian attempting to calm Grell down. "Sebastian..." she started. "Excuse me for interrupting this... moment, but, would you mind explaining what it is that I'm missing out on here?"
Sebastian looked down to Grell. He held her chin in his hand, tilting her head up to look at him. "She's already caught us in the act, what do you think? Should we just confess while we can?"
