Avery's POV

"Avery, Avery, Avery. " I hear softly. I open my eyes and see Dad. "It's the first day of high school, you gotta get up." I smile at the thought of high school. Cute boys, freedom, and cute boys.  But, now I remember, Dad said I wasn't allowed to date. "I'm going to go get the others up, when I come back, you'd better be awake." He leaves the room. I jump up out of bed, and go to my bathroom. I wash my face and put on mascara. I don't wear a lot of makeup because I don't see the need. I go back to my room and start searching for the perfect outfit. I find a hot pink shirt and a black leather skirt. I put my Tiffany necklace on, and start putting pencils and paper in my backpack. I look in the mirror, brushing my curls out into loose wavy ones. I walk down stairs to the kitchen, and see Mom making a fresh batch of coffee.

"Hey, baby girl. Ready for your first day of high school?"

"I guess so." I say, shrugging my shoulders. I sit at the table. Mom walks over to me and sits across.

"Why just I guess so?"

"Well, last year Sadie and Jayden took the ACT. Sadie got a 34 and Jayden got a 29. I barely passed middle school. I struggle to get C's."

"Baby, your father and I love you no matter what, you know that." I look her in the eyes.

"Mom, I almost got held back, Sadie and Jayden were straight A, honor students. I look at their grades and compare them to mine, and I know, that I'm never gonna be that smart. You and Dad say I can, but I don't think it's possible."

"Avery, you can be that smart."

"Mom, we both know I can't."

"Avery, I know it's hard being a middle child, always being compared to your older siblings, but that shouldn't stop you from trying. Your father and I love you no matter what." Dad walks in the room.

"Hey beautiful girls." Dad walks and kisses me on the cheek and then kisses Mom.

"Hey, baby."

"I'm going to make frittatas. Remember, no boys this year." He points his finger at me. I roll my eyes and look at mom. She rolls her eyes and smiles, too. Little do they know I'm talking to Sebastian, Nell and Eric's son.

"What if I have someone I am talking to?" I say with a sly smile. Dad whips a knife out of the knife holder,

"I'll go all mutant ninja assassin on them." He says waving the knife around." Noah walks in the kitchen, wearing khakis and a mint green polo with glasses on, carrying what looks like a math textbook.

"a^2 + b^2 = c^2?! Who knew the Pythagorean theory was so cool! It almost beat the time I found out about Charles Darwin's theory of Evolution!" I look at Mom.

"Even baby Noah is smarter than me." Noah comes and sits by me.

"It's ok, Avery. Some kids got Mom's brain," We look at Mom planning out the day accordingly to everyone's schedule and packing lunches, "and the others got Dad's." We look at Dad, flipping a frittata in the pan with a spatula. The frittata hits the ground, Dad picks it up, and blows on it, putting it back in the pan, acting like nothing happened. Noah goes back to studying math, and Elliot and Jayden walk in. Elliot is in his football jersey and basketball shorts while Jayden is in a LAVC, (Los Angeles Volleyball Community) shirt and Nike athletic shorts.

"Hey guys!" Jayden says. She's so pretty.

"Hey, Jay." Mom says putting sandwiches into our bags.

"Hey, Mom." Elliot walks over and kisses her on the cheek. He's been a sweet brother ever since the day he broke his wrist defending Jayden.

"Hey everyone! First day of senior year!" Sadie walks in the room in a blue Lily print and white Jack Rogers. I want to be Sadie. That way no teachers know the last name, Deeks, and won't compare me to her or Jayden. Dad puts the last frittata on a plate and we all go grab one, bringing it back to the table. Dad sits on the end, like a king. Chloe runs up to Dad, and I see he has two plates. He lowers one down to Chole and she eats it right up. Hopefully that was the one that fell on the floor. It's always been a tradition that we always sit at the breakfast table for the first day of school. We're all so different. Dad is flinging pieces of frittatas in his mouth, Mom is checking her daily schedule, Sadie is fixing her hair, Elliot is  playing what looks like Madden mobile, Jayden is texting her friends, and Noah is studying geometry. The room is silent, no one is talking to each other.
