Kensi's pov

I wake up in a hospital bed. Anna and Callen are by my side.

"I'll go tell the doctor she's awake." Callen gets up and leaves the room.

"What happened to me? How long have I been here?"

"About a day, and you were hit by a gun in the back of your skull. It split your skin, but didn't do bone damage. They stitched you up." I touch my skull. It has bumps, knots, and is slightly shaved from the stitches.

"Where's Deeks?"

"With Avery." My heart starts racing.

"What happened to Avery?" I ask, almost yelling. Anna looks at the floor. I get up out of the bed, I have no IV's in, so I leave my room. Anna follows. I see Sam in the waiting room, along with Sadie, Elliot, Jayden, and Noah.

"Mom!" Noah jumps up and hugs me. I hug back.

"Where's Dad and Avery?" I ask them.

"Follow me." Sam says. We walk into the intensive care unit. I see Deeks, sitting at the side of Avery's bed. She's hooked up to machines, and has bloody bandages on her upper chest, and her eyes are closed. She has stitches on her cheek and jaw. Deeks holds her hand, and has saddened eyes.

"Kensi?" I turn around. "I'm Doctor Smith, let's check out those stitches." He inspects my skull. "Looks good."

"Are you Avery's doctor, too?" I ask.

"Yes."

"What happened to her?"

"Before I tell you her condition, I think you would like to hear the story from your husband." I'm confused. I walk into Avery's room. Deeks turns his head, and I lock eyes with him.

"Hey, baby. You're awake." He let's go of Avery's hand, gets up, and hugs me.

"The doctor said for you to tell me the story? Why does Avery have a gunshot wound?" I'm very tense.

"The woman who did this is dead. I'll brief you on this case later. The woman had a gun to Elliot's head. She shot Callen, and aimed at me. I didn't see her aiming, because I was trying to make sure Callen was ok. Avery jumped in front of me, and got shot. Sam killed the woman. Avery took a bullet for me." I turn to the doctor.

"What are her conditions?" I ask.

"Bruised jawbone and cheekbone, gunshot wound to the chest, and abdominal trauma. The abdominal trauma was so much on her body she might not be able to reproduce should she choose to. She should wake up today or tomorrow. If she doesn't, we conclude she's in a coma." The doctor leaves the room. I wrap my arms around Deeks, and burry my face in his chest. I let the tears fall out. Deeks's arms wrap around me, tightly.

---

I'm sitting in a chair, Deeks beside me and our hands laced together.

"Deeks, I'm ready to hear about the case."

"Ok, I know the woman who did this."

"What?"

"I used to work with her, before I became an agent."

"Why did she want to kill us?"

"We dated, before I met you. She thought things got serious, but I never expected to get married or anything. Until I met you. I broke up with her, because I wanted you. I guess she never let it go, and saw our kids as our weaknesses, and used them." We look out at our kids, sitting in the waiting room, Sadie's boyfriend is sitting next to her, and has his arm around her. She's asleep. Jayden is sharing a bag of cheeto puffs with Noah. Elliot sitting with his hands on his face. Callen is sitting next to him, talking. Someone used my kids, and that's not ok with me. Deeks's arm slides around my shoulder.

"Deeks. Our kids, we have to tell them who we are."

"I told Sam, Anna, and Callen that we would do it as a family, and they need to be there so they know who they really are. Callen and Anna are going to tell Paislee too. We'll do it when Avery wakes up. But all of our kids are going to need therapy after this."

"Nate can talk with them." Deeks says, "Avery was really good in the field."

"How? She's never even fired a gun."

"She said she picked up a few things from CSI. You should've seen her. She was taking charge, I think she'd make a good agent someday."

"Deeks, I do not want my kids out in the field. It's very risky and dangerous. And they're only teenagers."

"I'm just saying, you need to see Avery in action."

"Avery was shot, Deeks. I don't want her out in the field, ever." I get up and walk out of the room. Deeks pisses me off sometimes. Avery is 14, she shouldn't be out in the field, she should be watching Netflix or something. I don't want my kids to get hurt.
