"Mommy, what does gay mean?" A young Michael asked his mother. She was taken aback.
"Where have you heard this word?" She asked, surprised that he'd even listened to somebody say it when he was only about five years old.
"Today a kid in class called me gay and laughed at me while I was with Jeremy at lunch. Is gay a bad thing?"
"No, sweetie, not at all," his mother assured. "But some people think it is."
"So what is it, then?" He questioned, with curious eyes probing his mom for an answer.
"Well... you know how usually girls and boys love each other very much? Like mommy and daddy?"
"Yes?"
"A boy and another boy can love each other, too. Some people don't like this idea, though, and people that are gay are made fun of," she said delicately. Michael took a moment to take in the information. He then asked another question.
"So... can a girl like a girl, too?"
"Yes. That's called being lesbian."
"Mommy?" Michael asked, twiddling his thumbs.
"Yes, dear?" Michael looked up at his mother, his hands behind his back as he considered what he was about to ask.
"Can I be gay?" He smiled nervously.
"If that's how you feel about yourself, then yes, you can identify as gay."
"I am gay," Michael smiled, upon his new discovery. Mrs.Mell, again, was taken aback. She wasn't at all bothered by it, but more surprised that her son would decide such a thing at a young age.
"What makes you think that, honey?" She inquired, keeping her gentle tone.
"Jeremy makes me feel butterflies," he explained, his face starting to redden, he played with the hem of his shirt and broke eye contact with his mother, who chuckled.
"I would say you're probably gay, then, Mikey. And that's just okay with me," she smiled. Her son hugged her legs, and she gazed at how adorable the child was, and how cute it was that he was in love with his best friend.
