the Queen chapter 1

"Breathe deep, breathe clear. Know that I'm here. Know that I'm here. Waiting. Stay strong, stay gold..

"You don't have to fear. You don't have to fear. Waiting. I'll see u soon, I'll see u soon.

"How could a heart like yours, ever love a heart like mine. How could I live before. How could I have been so blind...."

Tears rolled off my cheek. I stared at my ceiling.

A knock came at the door.

Then the door opened. My mother came in.

"Why are you moping around? Adeline you have to get on your feet and put in some effort!" she exclaimed.

I stayed still.

She sat next to me and caressed my hair.

"You can tell me anything," she said. And we stayed like that for a while.

"Miss Ravenwood you have a letter," Jessica said.

"Okay," I mumbled.

"I'll leave it on your vanity table," she said.

The door closed behind her as she left. Then a soft knock came at the door.

"Come in," I whispered.

"Hey Adeline," the voice said.

I rolled over to see the ribbon slim figure in the doorway. My eyes widened.

"Lorelei!" I exclaimed.

I stood up and my legs wobbled but I ran to Lorelei and gave her a bear hug.

"Hey stranger," I said in her ear. She laughed.

"It's good to see you too," she replied.

"I thought you were in Europe?" I said.

"I was but I heard that you weren't feeling joyful so I came down here," she said.

"How long are you staying?" I asked.

"I can stay as long as I want. My parents are okay with it," she smiled.

"Cute guys are literally everywhere," Lorelei smiled.

I rolled my eyes.

"Where can I get one of those?" She winked when we passed by Garrett.

"Don't you have a boyfriend?" I asked.

"Yes. But that doesn't mean I can't check out other guys," she said.

"True," I agreed finally.

We swam for a while in the pool. It was getting dark.

"So who stole your heart?" Lorelei asked.

"How do you know?" I asked.

"Please. I've been through a lot of heart breaks. A lot.
Hell, I've been the heartbreaker!" She exclaimed.

I giggled.

"Honey I'm your best friend. I'm basically your sister. So tell me who is it, what did they do?" She said.

"I didn't know I was falling for him..." I started off.

"That's how it always starts honey," she nodded like I didn't know any better.

I told her about the time Carter found me in the pool late at night and offered his jacket. I told her about the dance with him. And how he was stationed at my door. I told her about the smiles we exchanged.

I smiled while telling her this. Then I realized there were tears streaming down my face. I smiled through the tears and pain.

"And he left," I said.

"Why?" She asked.

"Because...he knew we—we...couldn't...be together," I said through tears.

"Oh Adeline," she whispered.

She gave me a real hug. My head rested on her shoulder and her arms were wrapped around me. And I just cried in her arms. Although it was nighttime I felt warm.

Then she lifted my chin to her face and said, "Adeline—" but was interrupted.
