CHAPTER 12

Courtney was thrown under the water as soon as she hit the bottom. Her head hit a rock as she tried to fight the current. She was knocked unconscious immediately. Blake dove under, caught her, and pulled her to the surface. He looked around and saw a branch. He grabbed it and pulled the two of them to the shore. "Not so beautiful when you're in the waterfall," he muttered.

He checked Courtney for a heartbeat and to see if she was breathing. She had both, but was still unconscious. He feared she had a concussion. He ran her, literally, to the hospital and made a twenty minute walk into an eleven minute run. He burst into the hospital, both of them soaking wet, and he was carrying an unconscious girl. It was quite a sight to see.

"What's the problem, sir?" a female nurse in her early twenties asked.

"She hit her head on some rocks, and I think she might have a concussion," Blake said hurriedly. Courtney was taken from his arms and put on a stretcher.

"We'll find out for you. Is she your girlfriend?" she asked, obviously wanting the answer to be 'no.'

"She's my fiancée," he said a too little harshly, but he was trying to get his point across. It worked, for the nurse went away. He sat in a chair in the waiting room and, well, waited. He waited for fifteen minutes while they scanned Courtney's mind. He used part of the time to call everyone up, his family and hers. Soon, they were all sitting there.

"She does, in fact have a concussion, which has thrown her into a coma. It's severe and we're not sure if she'll ever wake up from it. We're very sorry," the same nurse said. She winked at Blake. Blake looked away, disgusted by her. "You can see her if you want. Room 143."

Blake leapt up and practically ran to the room. He stopped in front of the door. He slowly pushed it open and went inside. He looked at Courtney and collapsed by her side. "Courtney, you have to wake up. You can't leave me. I can't lose you," he whispered to her. Their families flowed around them, crowding into the small room. They stayed for an hour, then left when it got dark, knowing Courtney wouldn't be waking up any time soon. Blake stayed there, holding her hand the whole time. When he was tired of standing, he sat down in the chair by her bed.

That's how the next day went too. Blake never left Courtney's side, except to go to the bathroom. He had paid someone to bring his meals to him so he wouldn't have to leave the room. Courtney got tube fed. Blake told the doctors to do anything they could to help her, that money was no object. The doctors told him they were doing all they could already.

A week went by. Another went by, then another still. Blake still had never left the room, he even slept in the chairs. People came in and out to visit, just to see if Courtney woke up. She never did. It was depressing to watch Blake at this point.

He reached over and took her hand in his, for the millionth time in those three weeks. He gave it a gentle squeeze. She did nothing, as was usual. He squeezed her hand again. The fingers in her other hand moved, just a little. Blake hopped up from the chair, still holding her hand. Her eyes fluttered open, ever so slowly. He let out the breath he didn't realize he was holding in. Taylor walked by, stopping to watch through the window.

"Where am I?" Courtney asked quietly.

"The hospital, Courtney," Blake told her.

"What happened?" Blake was expecting this; he knew that it was normal to not remember the events leading to a coma.

"You fell down a waterfall and hit your head on some rocks."

"Oh," she said. "One more question."

"Go for it."

"Who are you?"
