CHAPTER 1

Once upon a time... Wait. That's too cliched for this story, this story that is not your classic prince-saves-princess fairytale. Nope. This story starts in a high school. Yep, you heard correctly, high school.

"Blake!" Courtney Pennington shouted to her best friend. Courtney was head cheerleader, but she was no way a typical stereotype that cheerleaders are. "Come over here!" Blake Sullivan replied immediately, for he knew not to get on Courtney's bad side. Granted, he was her best friend, and she would most likely not get mad at him, but she had quite a temper at times, and he decided not to take a chance.

"We need to compare schedules." She said that for it was the first day of their senior year, the moment, the year, that everyone dreams about.

"Okay. Government, C.P. English, C.P. Chemistry, Calculus, Lunch, Study Hall, Honors Art, Current Events," Blake replied, listing off his classes. "Did you get all that?" Courtney nodded.

"Yeah, we have a few classes in common." She looked at her friend. Most people thought him to be a geek, which he was, just a little, mostly because of his geeky glasses that he never took off. He had them for so long that Courtney couldn't remember a time when he didn't have them, not that that meant a whole lot.

But Courtney just saw her best friend, her compassionate, kind, and caring best friend.

Let me give you a little background information, you know, the boring stuff, before the story really begins. Well, Courtney moved to the area the summer before kindergarten started, and they had been inseparable ever since then. If you think it's weird for a cheerleader's best friend to be a geek, shame on you for believing in stereotypes. You aren't alone, though, if you thought that, because all their classmates thought it was also weird, but they got over it. You will too, no doubt. Just give it some time and don't stop reading.

Okay, so I take it back, there is one person, a single person, who didn't like the idea but he kept it a secret to get close to Courtney. His name was Ethan Bowman and he was the quarterback. You are about to meet him. Are you ready? No? Well me either. This story is so much better without him, but here he comes anyway. "Hey, Courtney, baby," he said.

"Hi, Ethan. What's up?" she replied.

"Oh, you know, just football stuff. Oh, hey Blake, didn't see you there," Ethan said smoothly.

"Ethan," Blake gave a curt nod and then a blank stare, for he saw right through Ethan's act. Blake didn't show much emotion around Ethan, except maybe jealousy. Did I mention Blake was in love with Courtney? No? Then why didn't you say something? Yes, Blake loved Courtney, but that part was a secret, a big secret.

Now, I know at this point you're considering whether or not to continue this story, and I completely understand, but please continue. I know you want to because you know me, I'd say, just by seeing this much of the story from my point of view, and you should know that I hate cliches and I would never write one, even if this is a true story. Who am I, you might ask? Well, no one important, for now, anyway. However, you might recognize my name later when I'm famous (hopefully), or you might notice it's on the cover of this book, but in case you didn't look at the cover, my name is Ella Fitzgerald. There, now that that's taken care of, let's get back to this story because I'm shaking with anticipation just thinking about it.

"Anyway, Court, the boys are waiting for me. I gotta go. See ya later." He was, of course, referring to his football team.

"Sure, I understand. See ya." As soon as he was gone, she sighed dreamily. As you can probably guess, Courtney was in love with Ethan, just like every other girl (myself included, though I tried to tell myself it wasn't true), or so she thought.

"So, do we have first period together?" Blake asked, breaking their minute or so of silence. Courtney shook her head.

"No," she said, "but we have third, fourth, fifth, and seventh."

"Cool," Blake smiled, trying to be nonchalant, not like it ever worked out for him. Suddenly the bell rang. Blake and Courtney gathered up their things and went their separate ways. "See you third then!"

"See ya!" Courtney agreed.

* * *

Lunch came. Courtney and Blake walked together to the lunch line and got their lunch. "Where are we going to sit this year?" Courtney asked with a sigh. Where they sat the first day, they had to sit the rest of the year. They, like everyone else, had to. It was the school's rule, the rule that I, like most the rest of the school, didn't pay much attention to, but Miss Pennington hated.
