CHAPTER 5
Two weeks were quick to pass, though they didn't feel like they were going by quickly, but school will do that to you. Nothing happened except that boredom infested the school and many, even the populars, especially the populars, thought they were dying of it. Talk about over dramatic. I would expect that from the drama club, but, surprisingly, they were the least bored of the school, or at least it seemed that way.
That day Courtney had planned to ask Ethan if he would go with her to the annual Romeo and Juliet Festival. It was the seventeenth year their small town in New York was putting it on, and she was really excited for it because she had never gotten to go before. I was excited for it too, especially since I was also "dying" of boredom.
"Hey, Ethan, I have a question for you," she said as she approached him.
"Yeah, listen, I think that we need a break," he said in reply, not even sounding like he heard her.
"What?" she asked, appalled at him.
"Yeah, you know, a break, but just temporary," Ethan said.
"What?" she repeated, "Why, Ethan?"
"Because you've been pulling away lately. I thought that's what you wanted." It was true, she had been pulling away lately, but I had thought it was because of boredom. Maybe that wasn't quite true.
"But, I came over here to ask you if you wanted to go to the Romeo and Juliet Festival with me," she trailed off.
"Go to that stupid thing? Honey, only geeks go to that. Why don't you take Count Dorkula? I'm sure he would appreciate it."
"Fine, I will," she said. "And he has a name, you jerk."
She stomped over to Blake with a frown on her face. "I'm sorry," he said.
"You heard?" she asked, genuinely surprised.
"It's kind of hard not to. You weren't exactly quiet, you know," Blake said.
She sighed, "Yes, I know." She paused for a few moments, "But you will go with me, won't you?"
"Of course," he said with a smile, "I won't abandon you, like Mr. Quarterback over there."
"Thank you," she said, hugging him. She was also trying to hide her tears from the student body that was still staring at her.
"Let's just go home," Blake said, noticing what I had.
"Skip class?" she asked. "You, Mr. Valedictorian, is going to skip class? I'm skeptical."
"Hey now, there's still a chance you could be Miss Valedictorian, and yes, we're skipping class. Come on," he said, rolling his eyes at her. He ignored the gasps that arose from the crowd, from their audience.
They went to Blake's house and his mother asked, "What are you doing here so early?" Then she saw the state Courtney was in. "Oh, what's wrong, dear?"
"Nothing, Miss Sullivan," she said, giving a small smile to prove her point.
"Okay," she said, leaving the girl be.
The two of them went up to Blake's room so that his mother would give them some privacy. Courtney burst into tears, having held back all her tears at school. Blake let her cry, even though she was ruining his shirt when she leaned her head on his shoulder. After a few long minutes, she said, "This feels nice, like it's meant to be." Blake just stared at her, confused. "I mean, I think you were always meant to be my best friend, that's why this doesn't feel awkward." It did start to feel awkward once she said that. Blake looked, well, I don't know. I do know what he was thinking though, he was being majorly "friend-zoned." Poor guy, I thought.
