POV- Tyler

Later that night, around 11pm, my mom came into my room.

She didn't knock, of course.

Why do parents never knock?

"Tyler?" She had that high pitched tone meaning she didn't exactly want to talk to me, but she knew she had to.

I really didn't feel like talking.

"Yeah?"

"Um, can I ask you about something?"

My brain started coming up with all the things she could be asking me about.

My grades? My phone? My family?

...Josh?

Oh goodness. Please don't be Josh.

I just nod my head.

"Do... do you like boys?"

I felt my face go hot and red. Why was she asking me this? Why did she care?

"Um... what do you mean?"

"Well, I saw you with that boy Josh the other day. And, you were acting so goofy, and I thought that maybe you liked him."

Tyler could feel tears well up in his eyes. He wasn't ready to say anything. He just sat there.

"Ty?"

More silence.

"Give me your phone, Ty. If you can't tell me what's going on, you can't talk to him anymore."

Tyler began to hyperventilate, but quickly grabbed his phone and put it in her hand.

"This isn't fair. This isn't fair! Why can't I talk to him?"

"Tyler, I don't even know who this Josh is. He could be a drug addict, for all I know. You won't tell me. So you can't talk to him."

"He's not! He's perfectly fine!"

"Then why can't you tell me who he is to you?"

Silence.

Backing down wasn't an option. Tyler knew that Josh needed him. Now more than ever.

"I..."

His mom stared at him, waiting for something to escape his lips.

"I like Josh."

His mom turned her gaze to the window.

A few seconds passed, and Tyler began to sob. His nails began to claw at his upper arms, turning them redder than cherries. Small patches of skin began to bleed, but Tyler didn't care. He was mad at himself for being this way, sadly.

His mom did not notice any of this, and the quietness began to drive Tyler crazy.

"Say something!" Tyler begged.

Her mom took deep breath and mumbled "I knew it."

She handed Tyler's phone back to him.
