Chapter 3 - Towards Washington

The next day...

I slowly opened my eyes and sat up, the sun's light shining through the window beside me.

I looked on the floor, noticing Connor wasn't there.

I stood on the floor as Connor knocked on the door and opened it. "Are you awake?", he asked.

"Yes," I said with a smile.

"Alright. We shall head to Philadelphia as soon as we can right after you have eaten breakfast."

"Alright."

"By the way," Connor revealed Assassin Robes in his arms. "Achilles wanted me to give you this."

I took the robes in my arms and looked at them with awe.

"He wants to help you blend in with these surroundings."

"Tell him thank you," I spoke as I looked at the robes again.

The robes were a bit like Connor's, but more feminine.

I changed out of my sleepwear and wore the robes. They fit perfectly. Once I changed, I went downstairs to eat breakfast.

Once we were all ready, we boarded a carriage as Achilles followed.

Philadelphia - June 16, 1775

In a hall, Connor and I followed Achilles as we walked towards the room where the three Founding Fathers were gathering to sign the Declaration of Independence.

"Miranda...are you comfortable with this time so far? Has Connor been being mean to you yet?", Achilles asked, making Connor react, "Achilles!"

I smiled and giggled, "Don't worry, Connor is being nice to me and I'm trying my best to get used to this time."

"That's good. Connor, you know your duty, am I correct?"

Connor was silent.

"You are to protect Miranda and let her help you."

I looked at Connor as he avoided eye contact. His eyes were determined as we kept walking through the hall.

"And I must say, Connor, it's quite impressive, what you've accomplished."

"Is that a compliment?", Connor asked.

I looked at the both of them as I walked behind them, listening to their conversation.

"Now don't misconstrue. I'm sure the wole endeavor will end tragically. But to have come this far....Well, it's more than I ever expected."

"The people yearned for freedom, but feared to grab hold of it. That fear is gone now."

"Thanks to you."

Connor looked down, pushing away his proud smirk, but I proudly had a smile at what he has done.

Keeping his humble personality, he said, "No. This they did on their own."

"You diminish your role. But you've always been of humble heart," Achilles replied as we stopped in front of the door where the Founding Fathers were in.

"I do what is right. No more. No less."

"You cannot tell him."

"I have to. Otherwise, he will never be safe."

"He is safer not knowing! By planting the seeds of doubt, you threaten to topple his entire endeavor. If Washington is paralyzed, Charles Lee will strike. You'll cause the very thing you aim to prevent. Hunt the templars, as is your duty...But do not drag these men into it."

Connor looked down, trying to push his frustration away as Achilles placed his hand on my shoulder, "Miranda...please take care of Connor for me."

I nodded with confidence, "Yes, sir."

Achilles made a grin, "Thank you, now off you go."

Connor and I entered the room.

--

"We must now all hang together."

"Yes, we must indeed all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang seperately."

"You are once more, our savior," Samuel Adams spoke to Connor then noticed me. "Oh..who is this?"

"This is Miranda, my partner. She will help me for the rest of my mission," Connor introduced me.

I bowed with a smile, "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"Likewise," Samuel Adams replied with a smile as everyone else smiled as well.

"I must speak with the Commander," Connor spoke as we both stepped forward.

"He's gone to try and hold New York. The British intend to take it. I fear we'll need to recall our men from Quebec as well...It's one thing to declare our Independence." Samuel placed a hand on Connor's shoulder. "Now, my friend, we must make it so."

Davenport Homestead- 1777

I have agreed to join Connor as we prepare to head for Boston to talk to Commander Washington and fulfill our next mission.

Achilles tried to stop Connor from involving Washington, but he didn't see a reason not to. Neither did I.

I did promise to keep Connor in my line of sight in general, but I shall stay by Connor's side, because I agree with his ways.

But, Achilles's and Connor's arguments are simply unecessary.

I always have to be the one who has to create peace, but this time I didn't know what to say.

Connor walked out of the house, carrying a sleeping bag in his arm. Achilles and I followed after him.

"Don't do this, Connor!", Achilles yelled.

Connor stopped and turned around, "Then what would you propose we do? Sit and watch while the Templars take control? We are sworn to stop them. Or have you forgotten?"

Connor turned back around and tried to tie the sleeping back onto the horse's saddle.

"Assassins are meant to be quiet. Precise. We do not go announcing conspiracies from the rooftops to all who pass by."

What Achilles is saying is true...but...

I looked down as Connor replied, "Who are you to lecture anyone? You locked yourself away in this crumbling heap and gave up on the Brotherhood entirely."

Oh no...here we go...

"Since the day I arrived, you've done nothing but discourage me. And on the rare occasions you've chosen to help, you've done so little, you may as well have done nothing at all," Connor continued.

"Hey, Connor!", I spoke. "That was a little too far!"

"How dare you!", Achilles spoke up as he stepped in front of me, still holding a distance with Connor.

"Then tell me. On whose watch did the brotherhood falter? Whose inaction allowed the Templar Order to grow so large that it now controls an entire nation!", Connor spoke towards me and Achilles.

I looked down. I was speechless.

"If I sought to dissuade you, it was because you knew nothing! If I was reluctant to contribute, it was because you were naive. A thousand times you would have died and taken God knows how many with you. Let me tell you something Connor. Life is not a fairy tale and there are no happy endings," Achilles stated.

"No. Not when men like you are left in charge," Connor spoke as he looked at me, "Miranda, let's go."

I nodded awkwardly, as he helped me get on the horse. Once I sat, I kept looking down.

He went on the horse in front of me as Achilles stood before us, "In your haste to save the world, boy - take care you don't destroy it!"

Achilles looked at me with serious eyes as I nodded.

He looked back at Connor as he held the reigns of the horse and made the horse gallop forward, leaving Achilles watching us leave.
