Chapter 1
"Kenzieeee"
I heard my Grandmother call from down stairs. It was 8 in the morning on a Saturday and all I wanted to do was catch up on some much needed sleep.
"What?" I called down to her after dragging myself out of bed.
"Grandpa said that there was a meeting at the pack house at noon and that you better be there or he's making you do patrol duty for the next week." I groaned at the mention of patrol duty for a week straight. I didn't like the idea of patrolling the boarders for as many hours as I did, but being the elders only grandchild I had to obey and be a model of perfection for the other people my age.
I looked at the clock 8:05 Am.
"There's still like 5 hours until noon why did you wake me up so early ?" I said as I walked down to the kitchen where my grandmother stood in her apron getting boxes of pastries from the cabinet.
"Because your going to help me make food for the meeting Kenzie." She turned to me hands on her hips and a stern look on her face. "No excuses."
I tried to think of one excuse that could get me out of this. "But I haven't even showered yet, how about I go shower and dress, and when I could back down we can bake until our hearts content and I will still be ready for the meeting." I said grinning knowing that this would be the perfect excuse to skip about a hour or two of slaving in the kitchen.
She looked at me and glared defeatedly. "Fine but I want you down here and cooking after that shower don't procrastinate."
I nodded and walked over to the fridge for some OJ.
"Where's grandpa anyway ?" I said pouring my juice into the glass my grandmother sat on the counter for me.
"He left at around 6 or 7 to go consult with Alpha Dalton about today's meeting, patrol schedules and what not" she shrugged.
"But why so early ?"
"I guess they needed to have it done and out of the way for tonight."
I raised a questioning eyebrow. "What's happening tonight ?"
My grandmother stared at me like I had just lost my senses. "What?" I was confused.
"It's the 10th anniversary of the Great Pack War. I can't believe you forgot!" She frowned disappointed
"I didn't forget" I mumbled. How could I forget, that same war is what took my parents from my when I was 5. All I remember is my mother hugging me and kissing my forehead as she and my father dropped me off at my grandparents house. My father was speaking urgently with my grandfather, then he came to me and said "I love you my flower" then kissed my forehead and placed a letter in my little princess backpack that they had packed and placed on me. After they left that night I never seen them again. The letter was read to me after they were confirmed dead, I still read it when I have nightmares of them, miss them, or simply feel like remembering them.
I went back upstairs to my room and shed my pajamas before walking into my bathroom and getting in the shower. I stayed in until the water got cold, then I got out and took my sweet time getting dressed. I wore a floral mint long sleeve with white destroyed skinny jeans and my mint vans.
I grabbed my L'oréal hair mousse and applied it to my long curly brown hair. Then I took one last look in the mirror before heading down stairs. I was mixed with very fair Carmel colored skin, Long brown curly hair, with hazel green eyes, as far as a body I would say I had one I was curvy with a nice butt and boobs and a flat stomach. I could thank the many sports my grandparents put me in.
I smelled the heavenly aroma of cookies and cupcakes, my grandmothers speciality and my favorites! I walked in the kitchen planning on swiping a couple cookies when Grams wasn't looking but she has the ears of a bat and heard me walk in.
"11:00! What took you so long to get ready ?"
"I wanted to look nice" I said grabbing a cookie not bothering to hide the fact that I was getting one. I heard a gasp and turned around expecting to see a mouse or a spider but instead grams was just staring at me, sadness and longing in her eyes.
"You look so much like your mother, beautiful and graceful. But also like your father strong and confident. I miss them until I see you and I realize that they are still here in you." She said placing her hand on my cheek, i smiled.
"Well it's about 11:20 time to go set up at the KLPH." (Kache lalin Pack House)
Kache lalin means Hidden Moon in Haitian Creole it was the name of our Pack, it's Haitian Creole because the founder of our pack was. A Haitian Creole and his Luna was Spanish. When our founder went to Spain with his pack to trace down a urban legend he came across her at a lake and bada bing bada boom it was love. Although when she told her father/Alpha he forbade it and they had to sneak away to be together they traveled for months and finally came to America, and started a pack we've been here for 200 years. My grandfather was a descendent, as was my father, and now me.
"Grab the cupcakes off the counter and the car keys then we can leave." Grams may have be 57 but she was still limber, she had 4 cases of cookies I'm one hand and a bag of paper plates in the other making her way to the car.
I sighed grabbing the keys and cupcakes, I really didn't wanna go to this thing tonight all it would be was people hugging and touching me, telling me how sorry they were and how much they missed my parents. I hated the reminder that they were gone.
'Hey let's just get through this meeting and get some treats then we can think of a way to skip out on the anniversary party ok?' My wolf said feeling the irritation and sadness within me. I smiled she was one cool wolf and I was happy she was mine.
'Why thank you Mack'
I heard the car horn honk and rushed outside locking the door to the house behind me. I put the cupcakes in the trunk of the jeep with the rest of the good and climbed into the passenger seat.
