“Wake up Piper…WAKE UP!” the woman screamed at the teenage girl laying on the bed. The girl was Piper Mason.
“Wha..?” Throbbing entered her skull. The burnette teenager with hazel eyes gave the woman a confused look. But, she soon figured that it was just her lazy nagging mother who did absolutely nothing all day but drink. She would choose beer over her and her younger brother Jake any day. The woman stood at the right side of the bed, holding a Bud Light bottle in one hand, and a wooden paddle in the other.
“Ma,” Piper rubbed her head. “what the hell?” A boy wearing jeans and a checkered hoodie ran into the room. He had blonde hair and eyes similar to Piper’s. “What’s going on?” he was out of breath. He looked over to Piper who’s head was now bleeding. “Pipes, is mom hung over again?” The girl nodded.
“Hey!” the woman yelled. “Jake, don’t ya evuh, evuh evuh evuh, talk bout yah mudduh…”she lost her train of thought and slammed onto the ground.
“Aw what are we gonna do now?” he complained. “Just leave her there?” Piper really wished that her mom would stop drinking. She was the only parental figure they had left, since their dad had left them last year because of her mom’s drinking problems. How their mother had gained custody over them, Piper had no idea.
“I guess.” Piper said. She got out of bed and got ready for her first day of school. She went to High Valley High which was in Cleveland. The ironic thing is that valleys aren’t high, but whatever. She definitely wasn’t the best student around. She stopped trying around 7th grade when she found out she was ADHD. The teachers found her real hard to deal with, with the smart ass attitude of hers. But she really wasn’t a mean person at all. She just didn’t deal with other people’s BS. High Valley High was the second worst rated school in Cleveland. The teachers were terrible and worst of all, didn’t give out school lunches.
Story told in Piper Mason’s view. Chapter 1:
I was in the middle of the most interesting dream of my life, considering I never dream. So I was in a place, and I think it was called Small Shift Island from what it read on the wooden sign. I remember talking to a person with a shaggy brown hair and a beard. He smelled real bad too. Real bad. It was actually more of a nightmare than a dream. There was lots of screaming that hurt my ears, and there were people running around everywhere. When I woke up this morning, something really bugged me, but I don’t know what.
I went across the hall to the bathroom to cover up that ugly-ass wound of mine. It stopped bleeding, but man that thing was huge! I just slipped on a pair of jeans and a graphic t-shirt and I was on my way out to meet my friends Jax, Zoe,Cam, and Pete at the bus stop.
A boy with spikey brown hair and dark brown eyes walked up to me. “Hey Piper, you gotta listen to this! Okay… what’s yellow and can’t swim?” he said as he excitedly jumped up and down like a child. “A BULLDOZER! HAHAHAHAHA!” I guess I consider Jax my friend. Not because of his bad jokes or the fact that he is self-obsessed, (although he is rather attractive) but because he saved my life once. One day, my friends and I went on a fishing trip. Being the klutz I am, I fell of the boat. I never learned how to swim so I sank to the bottom of the lake. Jax dove off the boat and swam me back to shore. He even gave me CPR. After I woke up he kissed me. I had to admit, it was an amazing kiss. I bet it it would’ve been even more awesome if I was fully conscious.
A girl with black hair gave him an annoyed look. “That was the worst joke I’ve ever heard.” She snarled. Zoe and I have the most in common. We’re both real stubburn. That’s why we want to shoot eachother with an AK47 most of the time, because we’re both used to always being right. Grades aren’t the only thing that sets us apart, but Zoe is a bitch for the wrong reason. She loves putting others down. It makes her feel higher up then the rest. Another thing that sets us apart is that she is 5’10”, when I’m only 5’4”. Zoe could literally stomp on me.
“It was funny!” Jax frowned.
“Hey now, be nice!” scolded a dark skinned boy. Cam is the nicest person that I know, although he does get very defensive. Especially about the people he cares about. He’s got a good physique and is the star running back for the HVH Giants. We both met in a juvenile detention center.
I sort of got into a small fight with my math teacher. (My book accidently hit her in the face.) But that was after she called me worthless, and I’ve heard enough of that my entire life. The teacher slammed me against a locker, and then I clawed one of her eyes out. Luckily, they were able to put the eye back in and working good as new. Unluckily, she called the cops.
What Cam got in there for was because he used to be in a gang. He never did anything illegal. He just walked on the streets with his 4 friends and his brother Jordis. His parents had abandoned him and Jordis when he was 12 and Jordis was 10. One day, there was some kid who decided to pin Jordis down and put a knife to his throat. The kid almost killed him until Cam ended up killing the guy with his own bare hands. Cam still regrets it to this day. He didn’t mean to kill him. That’s why he was there.
“I was being nice, wasn’t I Pete?” she gave him a glare that was supposed to make him feel obligated.
“No.” he said, kicking a nearby rock that seemed to go nowhere, no matter how hard he kicked it.
Pete is my best friend. He is there for me no matter what. To talk about my friend problems, family problems, and even my boy problems. He doesn’t know this at the time, but he is my boy problem. The one thing I’ve always lied to him about is about the people I “liked”. I can’t help blushing everytime I see him. His long brown hair compliments his bright green eyes so well.
I try to snap myself out of it, because I know he is my best friend and it would never happen. The thing I like about Pete is that he’s not a full blown out player like Jax is. He says he is still waiting for that one special girl to come along. Well, that’s depressing.
As I sat in history class, I couldn’t stop thinking about that dream. It was terrifying to see everyone so…terrified. It bugged me to no end. I got many sketchy stares as I break pencils. I don’t notice how ridiculous I’m being until I realize that I’m out of things to write with.
“Uh, excuse me Mr. Brian sir?” I ask.
“Is there a problem, Piper?”
“Yeah. I’m out of pencils.” I gesture to all of the broken pieces of wood on my desk.
He sighed like he’d been through situations like this many times before. He awkwardly handed me a steel pencil. Really?
“Thanks…” I almost ask.
“Please,” he says. “don’t mention it.”
I was told by Zoe that all of us are meeting at the pavilion for lunch. This is getting ridiculous. I know that there was something wrong with that dream. It seemed so real. I keep trying to convince myself that everything I’m mulling over isn’t real, but I can’t. I really got to get this off my chest to someone. With so much on my mind, I’m really not in the mood to eat. But if I don’t eat something soon, I could only imagine how messed up I would be. I’ve decided not to risk it.
“Okay guys,” Jax chuckles. “What did one lawyer say to the other lawyer?”
“That he was going to violently scalp the other lawyer if he didn’t shut up?” asked Zoe.
“No.” Jax frowned.
This isn’t going to be easy. Everyone has nightmares. When I tell them my dream It’ll probably sound completely normal to them. I explain the dream to them.
“Yeah so…” asked Pete.
“Can I get back to the joke.” offered Jax.
“I need you guys to go there with me.”
