Chapter 6:

After running about seven blocks from the Sweet Cat, we take a rest. We lay an unconscious Pete on the asphalt, Zoe collapses as she holds her unrecovered sprained ankle, and Cam kneels down to check Pete’s pulse as we all just look back in astonishment. What have I dragged them into? Pete can be dead from Ace’s, uh… shadow scythe? I have no clue to what just happened, only twenty minutes ago. Everything was so surreal, it was crazy.

As I was looking at my injured friends, I broke down in tears. All of this happened because of my stupid dream and I. Pete can be dead now because of me.

Jax came over and gave me an unexpected hug. “Everything’s gonna be alright. We’re gonna get Pete better before you know it.” he said like I was a child. But it was okay, because I needed that.

“Well, I feel a pulse.” Cam said with lots of relief. He looked around. “Wait… where’s Jace?” We all looked around, but he was nowhere to be seen.

“Wait,” I say. “Do you think he’s still in the building?” We looked back at the Sweet Cat, which is burning down to the ground. We all know that if he was, he didn’t make it. I saw Cam make the sign of the cross. “Well, we should probably get this guy some help.” he pointed at Pete.

“You guys packed a first aid kit didn’t you?” Zoe glanced at me. I just looked down and shook my head. “You got to be kidding me. Out of everything, you forget the first aid kit, which we need the most right now. I knew we shouldn’t have trusted you with the supplies!”

“Zoe chill out!” Jax snapped. “This isn’t the time!” he gave her a dirty glance.

“I can go to CVS real quick and get one.” Cam suggested. “Be right back.” He sprinted to the store.

Cam came back about ten minutes later with the supplies. He treated Pete with some gauze and bandages. We all took turns lifting him. Unfortunately, it was a pretty long walk to Cam’s car since we ran seven blocks away from it. Once we got there we saw someone in the car. Cautiously, he opened the door and there was Jace, eating all of our food.

“Dude what the hell do you think you’re doing?” asked Jax.

“Uh…” he replied stupidly. “eating.”

“That’s our food!” I said. “Get out of here!”  I looked in the cooler, it was practically empty.

“I’m sorry guys! I was just hungry!”

“Lemmie see your pockets boy!” Cam demanded. Out of them dropped one of our pocket knives and a hair brush.”

Jax grabbed at the hair brush and frowned. “That was mine!”

“Get out of our car!” said Zoe. “We can’t trust you.” He walked out of the car. We all got back into the car and closed the doors.

“These punk kids,” Cam growled. “can never trust ‘em anymore.” He drove off and after he drove onto the highway, we all crashed.

I woke up with a splitting headache to the sound of long, continuous moaning.

“You’re shoulder feeling a bit better Pete?” asked Jax.

“Aghh…yeah a little. At least it stopped bleeding. I feel sick to my stomach bro. Got a Tylenol?”

Without anyone noticing, I looked out the car window and saw we were parked somewhere. I couldn’t make it out because it had to be the middle of the night. I was so relieved that Pete was not in a coma. In fact, so relieved that I just went back to sleep.

The next evening, I woke up feeling a lot better than I did before. The smoke fumes in my nose were finally fading. And it turns out we were already in Oklahoma.

“How did we get here so quickly?” I asked confused.

“Speeding!” Cam smiled.

“You did not!”

“You’re right, it was Jax.”

We were all confused. “Who in their right minds would let him drive?” asked Zoe.

“I was tired!” He laughed “You know, this kid is one hell of a driver! He drove us all the way from West Virginia to Missouri in only two hours!”

Pete spit out the Gatorade he was drinking. “TWO HOURS?”

“Jax you can’t do that!” Zoe bitched. “First of all, we have a murderer in the car, second of all you’re underage, and third it’s illegal!”

“Hey, I’ve been doing my job right so far, haven’t I?” Jax pulled out his Hair Glu and started applying it on his head. And that is true. I never really thought of it. Actually, I kind of felt bad for Jax. Everyone was underestimating him, and then giving him no credit at all. Without him, Cam might’ve been noticed, and Pete might’ve been dead.

After about three more hours, we get off our last exit. We’ve decided to go to the Colorado Plateau, which is a very famous desert in New Mexico.  We drive for a little while until we go on a road that leads us to the desert. Cam drives for a little while longer until it looks like we are on a straight road going nowhere.

“You know where you’re going?” I ask Cam.

“Haha no.” he does this psychotic chuckle that is most likely from lack of rest.

Zoe sighs. “Want me to take the wheel?”

“Oh but it’s illegal!” Jax mimics.

“Shut up Jax!” she frowned. “My cousins live up here so I kind of know the way around.” After they trade places in the car, she turns around and makes a left. Within 15 minutes we saw a couple of tour buses dropping off a crap load of people, at least 300. She speeds up and rolls down the window.

“OUTTA THE WAY!” she screams. She beeps the car horn like a crazy person. The crowd splits as if they were the Red Sea. She revved up the engine and took off straight, nearly hitting a couple dozen people. She eventually stopped and took a breath. She was out of breath and sweating like a pig.

“Did it.” she barley had enough breath to say it. Cam took over the wheel again. He thought it would be amusing to follow the people who were taking a tour in the car. We drove at approx. 2 mph and he beeped the horn now and then to scare them. Eventually, it even made me laugh, and then Zoe.

“Hahaha isn’t this funny?” Cam said, his eyes wide open and bloodshot.  He was still talking nonsense to us when I noticed a sign…

“STOP!!!!” I shriek. But it was too late… our car was falling off a cliff.
