"MINA UNNIEEEEEEE!" Chaeyoung yelled on Mina's porch a few mornings later, holding a covered tray of pastries.
Mina loved the sweets she made her last time with the gift basket, even though she tried to hide her true feelings about them as she ate. Chaeyoung hasn't been around Mina for long, but she's seen her be grumpy too long that any tiny sign of change would be obvious.
After what seemed like forever, the door opened, and Chaeyoung smiled up at Mina.
Except, it wasn't Mina.
A pink-haired girl smiled at Chaeyoung brightly at the door. Chaeyoung felt her self-esteem beginning to drop slowly the more she looked at the girl. She was insanely pretty, and wondered why such a pretty girl was in Mina's house. Could this possibly be Mina's girlfriend? Would that explain why Mina acts grumpy all the time? Because she had a girlfriend?
"You must be Chaeyoung, the girl Mina never stops talking about! Hi, I'm Sana."
Judging by the thick accent and non-fluent Korean, Chaeyoung guesses she must be from somewhere else. Plus, her name didn't sound Korean at all.
"Sana! Who's at the door?"
Chaeyoung's gaze went to her right, where Mina appeared, looking at Chaeyoung.
"She's so adorable, Mina-chan!" Sana exclaimed, before saying something in another language.
Mina was nodding as if understanding, so it had to be Japanese. Chaeyoung remembered being told by the woman herself that she was Japanese. Still, Chaeyoung felt awkward since she didn't know the language.
Maybe she should start studying it to impress Mina...
"Chaeyoung-ah, come in!" Sana said, skipping back inside.
Mina nodded for Chaeyoung to follow, which she did with a tiny smile on her face. She didn't want to be intruding on whatever they were doing. They were probably spending time together as a couple, and Chaeyoung had to ruin it. Mina didn't seem mad, but then again, she was almost always good at hiding emotions.
"Mina's told me a lot about you, since I've been in Japan," Sana said, sitting in a couch in the living room.
Chaeyoung sat the platter on the coffee table, and sat in a chair opposite her. Mina sat on the floor, with her legs crossed, in front of a laptop and began typing away.
"She's told me about you too," Chaeyoung mustered.
Mina told Sana something in Japanese, which seemed to excite her and she scurried in the kitchen.
"What's wrong?" Mina asked Chaeyoung, eyes glued to the laptop screen.
"Nothing's wrong," Chaeyoung chuckled.
"Tell me. Yes, there is. You're not talking as much."
Chaeyoung hesitated, wondering if she should really tell Mina about her concerns and wondering. Would Mina laugh at her for how dumb it will sound? 'Of course she's my girlfriend! Who else would she be?'
"I just...feel like I'm intruding."
Mina scoffed. "As if. It's not like we're dating or anything."
Chaeyoung stayed quiet, but internally sighed in relief. Mina wasn't dating the other pretty Japanese woman. If she had been, Chaeyoung was pretty sure Mina would chose Sana over her any day.
Mina stopped typing to look up at Chaeyoung. "Did you seriously think we were dating?"
The back of the small girl's neck felt hot, and she looked down in embarrassment.
"You did, didn't you?"
"Um...wha--"
"Sana is the girl I'm friends with in Japan."
There was a small chuckle, and Chaeyoung looked up. She felt her own self beam at the small grin gracing Mina's features. She's never seen Mina genuinely smile before, and the younger girl thought it was adorable to say the least.
If Mina and Sana aren't dating...then it means Chaeyoung still has a chance to date Mina! Or at least win her heart over.
"Mina! Have a pastry!" Chaeyoung enthusiastically offered.
"No."
"Yes!"
"No."
"Please?"
"No."
"I baked them for you."
"I don't like them."
Chaeyoung frowned. "You ate them, though."
"I was hungry."
"Well, you must be hungry now! Eat!"
"No."
"I won't stop until you take one."
With a roll of her eyes, Mina took a pastry, earning a satisfied grin from Chaeyoung.
Later that day, Chaeyoung found herself making plans to stay the night at Mina's house. She would be perfectly fine with it, if only Sana wasn't staying there as well. Don't get her wrong, there's nothing wrong with Sana, but she can't help but begin to feel slightly jealous when she's around Mina. What if Mina becomes one of those characters in books who begins to fall for their best friend? It would tear Chaeyoung's heart to pieces.
Mina was getting ready for bed in her own bed, leaving Sana and Chaeyoung to sleep on the floor by choice. Chaeyoung was in the kitchen, wrapping her pastries up when she felt someone enter. She assumes it's Mina, since Mina has said that she often gets a bottle of water for if she wakes up in the middle of the night. But when Chaeyoung turned around, a pink-haired woman met her instead.
"Oh, I thought you were Mina," Chaeyoung chuckled.
Sana chuckled. "She's too busy chanting some death ritual," she joked.
Chaeyoung chuckled, putting the pastries in the fridge.
"You know, you should get to know her more..."
"Why would you say that?"
"Because...she talks about you way more than she talks about a normal friend. Not that she really has any."
Chaeyoung couldn't help but grin. But, why should she trust this stranger, despite being Mina's friend? She could be lying to Chaeyoung.
"She's a good friend," Chaeyoung nodded.
"Well, yeah, but that's not what I meant. Just...just annoy her a little more, you know?"
Chaeyoung chuckled. "She's told me countless times I'm annoying. I always annoy her anyways."
"Keep doing whatever you're doing, okay? Trust me, she likes it."
That sounded weird to Chaeyoung, even though she was planning on doing so anyways. But before she could be given the chance to ask, Sana was already out the kitchen, a pack of cookies in her hand.
