Chapter 4: Unexpected

It was Saturday, February 25th, 2017. It was a beautiful day. It was cloudy outside, some sun speaking through, but it wasn't raining. We were in Egham, Surrey at Great Fosters Hotel for one of the most special, happiest days. One of my really good friends from university, Maya Brennan, was soon to be Maya Preston.

It was morning and all seven of us (the bride plus all the bridesmaids) were in one of the hotel rooms getting ready. Maya was behind the room divider in the process of putting on her beautiful dress with help from her mum and sister. I was finishing off with my makeup, putting a nude pink lipstick on my lips as I looked at myself in the mirror. In the corner of my eye, I could see Justin, the videographer, filming me. I looked towards the camera and gave a playful wave before looking back in the mirror. 

All the bridesmaids were wearing the same beautiful baby pink coloured dress that Maya picked out and bought for us. It was floor length with a slit in the front that starts just above the knee. It had an off the shoulder neckline and a pink ribbon that tied around the waist. It was a beautiful, simple dress.

When Maya was finally able to get her dress on, she stepped out from behind the divider making all of our jaws dropped with awe. We've seen pictures of her in the dress before, but they didn't do it justice. She looked even more stunning, and the dress looked even more beautiful in real life. Maya had a huge smile on her face as she looked in the floor length mirror, all of us gushing compliments at her as we gathered around. All of us were a bit emotional since this day was actually happening.

Maya finished getting ready, Justin recording the whole thing for Maya and Nathan's wedding video. Maya looked absolutely beautiful with her hair in a beautiful updo with braids and flowers in her hair. She looked like a princess.

We waited for the groom and his groomsmen to finish their photo shoot with the photographer since our turn was next. We had a few sips of champagne while we waited and did up our heels. I offered to check and see if the photographer was ready for us, so I went down the stairs as carefully as I could in my high heels and long dress.

I looked around the foyer of the hotel, not seeing a photographer there. I passed by the large room where the reception was going to be held and saw a few people doing some finishing touches on the decorations. For a second I forgot that I was in the middle of a task and stepped inside to have a better look. I found myself smiling with happiness and excitement filling up inside of me.

There was another person in the room too. He held a professional camera in his hands with a big, expensive lens attached to it. I walked up to him to ask if he was ready for the bride and bridesmaids photos. He was facing me with his body bent over as he took pictures of the table decorations. The flash went off and he changed his position before taking another. I opened my mouth, about to talk when the photographer lowered the camera from his face. My eyes instantly widened and I felt like everything around me was in slow motion as brain registered what my eyes were seeing.

I was snapped back into reality a second later, my heart racing a million miles a second. I quickly turned around before he could have a look at me and dashed out of the room. I felt my whole body panic as I rushed back up the stairs. I couldn't believe what I saw. I felt like my brain imagined it. I didn't want it to be true. But deep down, on the inside, I knew it probably was real. And that fact made me so completely horrified.
