=======================
Prologue
It happened on a July summer's day. Friday, July 10th, 2000 to be exact.
The sun was shining. There was not a cloud to be seen in the clear blue sky. It was 20 degrees celsius; a beautiful, warm day to wear shorts and a t-shirt.
It was the afternoon, the two kids had just eaten macaroni and cheese for lunch and were now playing in the backyard, running around with the sprinklers on to keep cool. The girl's mum who was supervising the two six-year-old kids from the patio chair smiled as she watched them having fun with an open novel in her hands.
"Bentley, let's play a game!" The little boy with straight brown hair exclaimed with excitement.
"Okay! What's the game called?" Bentley smiled a huge smile, loving the different kind of games they would play together.
"It's called 'The Water is Lava'. Basically, we have to try not to get wet because it's lav—ahhhh!" Harry yelled as the revolving sprinklers started up again. Both of them yelled and ran away, their arms flailing all over the place from excitement. They screamed and they laughed. They were so carefree and happy. They were innocent.
After two hours of playing the lava game and many others, they both grew tired and lay on their backs on the damp grass, looking up at the sky.
Bentley's father came back from work and joined Bentley's mum on the patio chair, sharing a hello hug and kiss. The two kids watched from the distance, Bentley's mind busy with thoughts.
"I want to get married when I'm older. Do you?" She asked Harry. The boy looked sideways at his best friend and shrugged his shoulders.
"Yeah, I guess I do. But what if I end up like my mummy and daddy?" He said referring to his divorced parents.
"You won't."
"You don't know that, Ben. Gemma says that almost 40 percent of marriages end in divorce. I don't know what that means but she says that it's a very high number."
"Oh..." Bentley felt like her hopes and dreams were crushed in that moment. "That's...sad."
"It is," Harry sighed.
"I-I don't want that to happen to me, Harry. I want a happily ever after."
"Me too, Ben."
They were silent for a few minutes. Bentley was trying to think of ways to solve this worrying thought that was in her head.
Then she thought of a solution.
"Harry!" She excitedly said and sat up straight, a huge smile on her face.
"What is it?" Harry asked, sitting up as well and crossing his legs.
"What if in the future we get married." Harry furrowed his eyebrows not quite understanding what Bentley was trying to say. She let out a small huff of frustration but the excitement was still bubbling inside of her. "Like if we're not married by a certain age, then we could just get married instead. Isn't that a smart idea?! We can get our happily ever after!"
Bentley stood up and started jumping up and down from her idea. Harry continued sitting on the grass as he thought about it and after a few seconds he stood up and jumped up and down with Bentley.
"That's a great idea, Bentley!" They both laughed with excitement, too innocent and too naive to know what marriage exactly means. "What age would we get married if we still aren't married?" Harry asked after they'd both settled down. "What age to people usually get married?"
"Uhhh...I'll ask my mummy." Bentley ran over to her mother who was still sitting on the patio chair.
"Mummy, can I ask you a question?" Her mother looked up from her book and smiled.
"Of course, sweetie. What is it?"
"What age do people usually get married?"
"Oh," her mother, Kaitlyn, said with surprise. "Why are you asking, Ben?"
"I'm just curious," Bentley smiled innocently.
"Some people get married when they are young and some people get married when they are older. It depends on the person." Bentley furrowed her eyebrows slightly from the vague answer. "But I would say that the average is around 28 to 30 years old." Now that answer made Bentley smile widely.
"Okay! Thanks, mummy!" Bentley started running off but after two steps she turned around. "Another question. What do you call someone who is not married and alone?" Kaitlyn was wondering why her child was asking these question but just went along with it. Kids always asked random questions after all.
"Single."
"Thank you!" She yelled and was off once more.
Bentley ran back to Harry who was waiting with eagerness. They both sat down with their legs crossed, their faces serious as they discussed their plan.
"Mummy said people usually get married when they are 28 to 30 years old. So if we are still single—that's the word for someone who is still not married and alone—at 28 years old then we could get married?" Bentley asked, wanting to make sure Harry was okay with that idea. Harry quickly nodded his head up and down.
"Yes, we get married."
"Okay." Bentley had a huge smile on her face. "Pink promise?" She said, holding up her right hand with her pinky finger sticking out.
"Pinky promise," Harry nodded his head and linked his pinky with hers.
It happened on Friday, July 10th, 2000 at 4:32 pm. The sun was still high up in the sky. The weather was still beautiful. The grass was still damp from the sprinklers. And that was the exact moment when Bentley Richardson and Harry Styles made a vow to get married at 28 years old if they were both single.
