Chapter 16: First Date

I took the last bite of my lunch and leaned back against my desk chair. As I chewed the food in my mouth, I slipped off my shoes and rested them up on my desk. I looked up at the ceiling, gulped, and sighed. I was only halfway through the day.

It was the first day back after Easter holiday and the kids were way too hyper to get anything done. In the morning, we started the day off by going around the class to share what they got up to during the break. After that, we needed to finish reading the book 'Wonder' so we could move onto the next activity for English, a book report, but they just couldn't sit still or keep their mouths closed. And the same thing happened when we moved onto Maths, they just couldn't do work. As much as I loved them, it was super frustrating for me. So I also knew that not much would get done this afternoon. And that sucked, but what could I do.

After sighing once more, I opened the bottom cabinet of my desk to pull out my cell phone. I quickly checked to see if I had any notification from anyone, but there was nothing. I unlocked my phone and clicked on my Photos app. A smile reached my face as I looked at all my recent pictures of Dublin.

Once when I got past the jealousy, I really started to enjoy my vacation. I was really happy that I went on that spontaneous trip with my family, so I was so sad when it finally came to an end and we had to come back to Manchester. But at the same time, I was also kind of excited to go back into the routine of work. Because going to work made me feel busy, which also helped me feel less lonely.

It also helped distract me from the fact that the last I've heard from Harry was Friday night when we had that late-night phone call. He never messaged me or called me again after that, not even after they came back from their holiday. And I didn't text or calling him either. I knew that nothing more would happen between us, so I had to get over him. It was for my own benefit.

"Bentley," I heard my name being called followed by a quick knock on my door. I raised my head and saw Tammy walking in with a stack of paper in her arms.

"Hey, what's up?" I said as I locked my phone and placed it on my lap. She stepped into my room and did a dramatic exhale. "Same," I sympathized with a tight smile as I inhaled through my nose.

"The first day back is always a hard one."

"You got that right. Couldn't get through half the things I wanted to this morning. I feel like I'm probably just going to scrap my plans for the afternoon and just let them start watching Wonder already," I honestly said.

"I feel like I might do something similar. Just put on a movie or play games with them until they tire out—I don't know. Still got fifteen minutes to figure that out."

"Well, good luck with that," I said, making her chuckle.

"Thanks," she waved before leaving.

"No problem," I called out.

I couldn't be more relieved when I heard the final bell ring. As much as I absolutely loved my job, some days were really tough, and today was one of those days. I was so physically and mentally drained that all I wanted to do was rush home so I could be cosied up on my sofa, order food, and watch a movie before going to bed early. So when the last parent came to pick up their child, I rushed back into my room to quickly grab my things before leaving the school. I didn't bother cleaning up or prepping for the next day since I just didn't have it in me.
