At The Beach

I awoke to the sound of my alarm clock screaming. Rolling over, I reached up and cut if off. Slowly, I sat up and stretched. Looking out my window, I saw the blind and curtains to Lndsey's room were shut. Getting out of bed, I walked into the bathroom that was connected to my room. Brushing my hair, I pulled it up into a ponytail. Today was supposed to be hotter than yesterday, and I was going with Lindsey to the beach, which would be even hotter than here. Walking back into my bedroom, I changed into a white tank top and blue shorts with my bathing suit under them. Looking in the bathroom cabinet, I found my suntan lotion and put it in a small purse-like bag. Just as I got done, I heard my mom call, "Casey, your friend's here."

"Ok, I'll be down in a minute," I called back.

Making sure I had everything I needed, I headed downstairs. Lindsey was standing in the living room with Mom. Mom looked over at me and smiled. "You two have fun at the beach," she said.

"We will," I said and looked at Lindsey. "Let's go."

She nodded and we headed out the door and down the street towards the beach. As we walked, we talked about our friends and family and anything else that came to mind. I found out that Lindsey's dad had left when she was just a baby and she didn't even remember him. Since then, her mom had had countless boyfriends, but none lasted very long.

Finally, we arrived at the beach. Not many people were there yet since it was so early. Walking down near the water, we each laid out a towel and took off our shirts and shorts, revealing out bathing suits. Lindsey's was a pink bikini that tied at the back of her neck with blue pok-a-dots and mine was a solid blue bikini. Taking out my suntan lotion, I rubbed it in and laid down, closing my eyes to keep from being blinded by the sun. I had just started to doze off when I felt something cold splash all over me. Sitting up, I say Lindsey grinning and water rolled down my body.

Standing up, I ran towards her. She turned and ran into the water, splashing me each time I got close. Finally, we both became tired and laid down on our towels. "This is so much fun. We should do this every week," said Lindsey.

I looked over at her. She was laying on her side looking at me, a giant smile on her face. I could tell she was really enjoying this. "Yea, I haven't had this much fun in a while," I replied.

"Yea. At my old home we were too far away from the beach to ever go, really. We went once a year, sometimes twice, if we were lucky. I'm so glad we have a beach within walking distance now."

As I listened to her talk, I found myself looking at he again. Hearing something behind me, I looked back. There stood Daniel and a group of his friends, Josh, David, Jason and Cody. Daniel was a tall guy, almost six foot, with short brown hair and eyes to match. He was captain of the football team and one of the most popular guys in school, but also one of the biggest jerks. He stood there grinning at me in his gray swimming trunks. "What a pleasant surprise. My favorite girl at the beach in a bikini. You know, you should wear a bikini more often," said Daniel.

"Yea, sure. That way you can look at something you'll never have," I said slightly irritated.

"Something I'll never have? Nah, I'll have it one day. Just wait. You'll come to your senses and see just how great a guy I am, and I'll be waiting. Why don't you let me rub some of that lotion on you?"

"No thanks. I'll do it myself," I said and looked over at Jason.

Jason and Daniel were brothers, but even thought Jason was younger, by a year, he was also taller, six foot four. He had dirty blond hair that reached below his ears and green eyes. Unlike Daniel, Jason wasn't into football, instead he was into skating and soccer, and wasn't very popular. The only reason people really knew who he was was because of Daniel. Jason and Daniel were brothers, but they didn't get along very well. Daniel was always pushing Jason to quit soccer and play football but Jason always refused. As Daniel started to walk off and Jason went to walk past me, I stood up and walked over to him. "Hey, why don't you hang out with me and Lindsey for a while? As long as it's ok with you," I said looking at Lindsey who nodded.

Jason thought for a moment, then nodded. "Sure," he said.

"Great," I said and punched his arm lightly, then took off running. "You're it!" I yelled back.

Daniel looked back and I could see him frown. Lindsey stood up and started running after me before Jason realized it, but he finally took off after us. Lindsey and I ran into the water and waited. Once Jason got close, we splashed him. All three of us were laughing the whole time. As a wave came, I was knocked forwards, right into Jason who grabbed me. "Got ya," he said with a smirked.

"No fair," I said, pretending to pout. "You had help."

"Not my fault the wave was on my side," he replied.

I could feel his hand on my back trying to untie my bathing suit without me knowing. I put my hand on his arm and pulled it away, giving him a little glare. "What?" he said innocently.

"You know what," I replied with a smirk.

The rest of the day the three of us just hung out at the beach. Every once in a while we would start chasing each other or something, but it soon became way to hot for that. Instead, we just laid on our towels or relaxed in the water. As the sun began to set, Jason said good-bye and left. Once he was out of sight, Lindsey said, "You two like each other, don't you?"

I looked over at her. She sound kind of, sad. But why would she be sad? "Yea, I guess we kinda do. He's pretty cool once you get to know him. Nothing like Daniel. I've known Jason since we were just kids. Been friends ever since."

"Would you ever date him?"

I thought for a moment. Her questions caught me off guard and I wasn't sure what to say. "To tell you the truth, I don't know if I would. I mean, I wouldn't want to ruin our friendship if something happened."

"I see," said Lindsey standing up. "Well he is pretty hot, but so are you," she paused. "Well we better get back home. It's starting to get dark."

I nodded and helped pack everything up, thinking about what Lindsey had said, then we headed home. The whole way we talked again, mostly about what had happened at the beach. As we reached home, we said good-bye and I turned to walk to my house, but stopped when Lindsey said, "Casey, I have to tell you something."

I turned around and looked at her. "What is it?"

"Well, you see," she paused. "I hope this doesn't ruin out friendship, but, um, well, I'm bi."

I stood there staring at her for a moment. I couldn't believe what she had just said. I had nothing against bi people or anything, I just hadn't thought she'd be like that. "Oh, that's cool," I replied.

"So, you don't hate me or think I'm a freak or anything?"

"No way! You're cool. Doesn't matter what your sexuality is," I said with a smiled.

She smiled back and we went home. After taking a shower, I laid down in bed and stared up at the ceiling. Lindsey's bi, I can't believe it. Guess you always find out something new everyday. I thought to myself and drifted off to sleep.
