Life for Heidi Hansen had been tough ever since her husband left her to raise her son alone. She still remembered the day that no good man left. It was a February afternoon when that truck pulled into the driveway, Heidi scowling as she looked out the window. She couldn't believe she thought that man loved her. She moved to turn away so she wouldn't cry, when she felt something bump against her leg.
"Mommy! Twuck!" Little four-year old Evan Hansen pointed at the truck outside, a small gasp leaving his small mouth. He looked up at his mother with a huge grin before running towards the door.
Heidi almost panicked when she saw him starting to run. She didn't want him to go outside and see his father packing up to go away. "Sweetie! Don't go outside!" The mother called after her child, running behind him.
Before Heidi reached her son, he was outside. He gaped softly at the real life truck in his driveway. Heidi couldn't just make him go back inside. His face was priceless.
"Well well well, looks like she decided to come outside." A voice came from behind Heidi, making her flinch. "I can't believe you let him come out here. He seems to love this thing, though. Weird little dude." Her ex-husband snorted in her ear. That was it.
"Evan, sweetie," She kneeled down to her son, "You want to sit in the truck?"
Evan's eyes immediately lit up at the thought of sitting in a real live truck. He nodded faster than he ever had in his four years of life. Heidi leaned down to pick up her son, shooting a glare at her ex-husband as she did so. She opened the door of the drivers seat and placed the toddler right behind the wheel. The little boy gasped. He felt so big sitting in that seat! He grabbed the wheel, pretending he was actually driving the truck.
Heidi watched her son with proud eyes, joy filling her as she saw her little guy grinning wide. Her joyful feeling fell though, when she heard that sly voice whisper in her ear once again. "Take it in, cause this is the happiest He's ever going to be."
The mother looked back at the man she despised, giving him a cold glare. "I want you out. Now," She huffed and turned back to see Evan still having fun.
It took twenty more minutes before everything was packed into the U-Haul. Heidi held Evan on her hip as she watched the truck start to roll out of the driveway, and the man she once loved start to leave. Evan waved one of his little hands as he shouted "Goodbye, Daddy!!"
Heidi felt numb. She couldn't believe this had actually happened. That man that she once loved was so different.
Goodbye... Goodbye... She thought to herself, giving a little wave before turning to walk back into the house... that big house. It was just her and her little guy now. She didn't know if she could ever love another man again. Only time could tell...
