Short Scary Stories- Reddit

1. Under the covers

Reddit User- DoverHawk

When Adam was little, he used to click off the lights to his bedroom and sprint to his bed as quickly as he could every night.  He would fly over toys and stub his toes, but that never mattered; what mattered was getting to the safety of his covers before the things that live in the dark could get him.  He imagined twisted hands and claws and teeth coming out from the darkness, reaching for him as he ran, abated only by his bed and the protective shell he made around himself with the bedsheets.

When the things in the dark finally came for him, taking the form of a man climbing through the window, he thought that it was the covers that saved his life.  Instead, he was saved by the simple fact that his little brother wasn’t quite as fast.

2. And it smiles

You sit rigidly in the antique chair, breathing slowly. A warm breeze wafts in through the small window, spinning and swirling dust in the light. Unusual sounds filter through the dusty attic. Muffled scratching and distant thumping noises bounce around the stacks of old boxes and deceased furniture. You look sharply to the stairs as your heart expands into your throat. Frantically, you run, throwing boxes and toppling old shelves in blind panic. The muffled scratching rips forcefully behind you and heavy pounding enters the room, quickly closing in. Everything shakes as the pounding swallows the room. Your legs and arms freeze mechanically, locking in place, and you fall to the floor. All four of your now immobile limbs whir and smoke as they struggle to lift your terrified body off the attic floor. They are all invisibly pulled backwards, each of them jerking violently, shooting sparks as their joints give way. The now pounding sound consumes all of your remaining senses and still continues to increase in volume. Your vision begins to pulse with the unbearable pounding sound as the pressure still magnifies. You feel sharp stabbing wounds on your neck as your ears shatter, ripped to pieces by the vicious sound waves. Just as consciousness fades away, you see Its form slip into the space above you. Its shadowed eyes burn menacingly through the inter-dimensional haze that obscures Its true size; and It smiles.

3. Getting up in the night

Reddit User- Ikasatu

I got up to use the bathroom, and didn't see anything on my way there, but as I was going I heard a fumbling at the front door. I figured my wife had just gotten back home. I'm flattered that she still wants to come lie next to me after all these years, but I wish she'd donated her body to science, so I wouldn't have to keep driving her back to the cemetery in the middle of the night.

4. Mirror Image

Reddit User- Jaime_Jaime_Feu

Lucy’s only friend was the girl she saw in the mirror. Lucy grew up in a very strict household, where she was not allowed to play with other children or leave the house. She had been very sick when she was younger, and even though she was much better now, her mother wasn’t quite ready to loosen the apron strings, so to speak. Lucy didn’t mind, though. She loved her friend in the mirror. She looked exactly like Lucy, and she even liked doing the same things Lucy liked to do.

Lucy would be sitting in her room, reading a book or playing with toys, and she would look up and catch the glance of the girl in the mirror. They would wave at each other, sometimes mime a few things together, being silly and playing around, and then Lucy would go back to what she was doing and the mirror girl would do the same. It was nice just having someone there with her.
