The Call

Reddit User- ExtraChaos

They say there's a call you always remember.

The kind of call you never forget.

That one call that always sticks with you.

What they didn't say was that call would be my first.

I still remember how excited I was for my first day. My best friend had gotten me the job. High fiving him as I walked in, I punched my time card and took my place near the phone.

The phone didn't ring immediately like I thought it would; fifteen minutes of dead silence went by. Each minute that passed led to a deeper, heavier breath. Why was I nervous to answer the phone? Just as I thought I was going to blow out a lung, I heard that first ring.

Before I could say hello, the woman on the other end screamed.

"I need help! Please! Somebody send help!", she cried. "My husband is trying to kill me!"

It was then I froze.

"Please?! - Somebody?! - Anybody?!"

At this point I could hear her running. A deep voice was in the background yelling, as I heard door after door slam.

I couldn't choke out my words. They were stuck like a lump in my throat. After I thought I was so ready for this job, it was apparent I was not.

"Help!"

"Ma'am...", I started.

"Hello?! Please help! I'm going to die!"

"Ma'am, where are you?"

Another door slammed and the phone went quiet.

"Ma'am, please, where are you?"

I motioned to my friend. He could tell by my face that something was horribly wrong.

"Ma'am, please, where are you?", I repeated.

In a timid whisper, she replied, "I'm hiding in the closet. The house is 519 Pine St, please, I need help now."

I yelled to my friend to dispatch the police. I wasn't going to let this woman die.

"Ma'am, the police are on their way. Stay put, we're going to get you out of there", I said, hoping it sounded more confident than it felt.

"It's too late, he found me."

I could hear the phone hit the ground. Even though it was a gentle thump, it felt like a deafening thud.

I wish I tore the phone away from my ear.

I wish I had hung up.

I wish I had never taken the job.

It took six stabs for him to end the screaming. But for me, those screams will never end.

The police arrived shortly after. The man had slit his wrists and bled out following the murder of his wife.

I never came back to work. Even though everyone said I did all I could. After that call I realized I could never take another call like that. What if the next was from a kid or someone I knew?

They said it was a once-in-a-lifetime call, but I couldn't chance it.

After all, I was just the pizza delivery guy.
