Chapter Seven
~Kennedy~
She couldn't do it.
Kennedy shook her head at the thought, she couldn't bring herself to 'seduce' Josh. It just wasn't like her.
A smile crept to her face when she thought of Josh having to embarrass himself in front of those girls. It was obvious that he wouldn't even have a chance at winning, swimming was Kennedy's game. Sure, he was a surf champion, but surfing didn't contain as much swimming as swim competitions.
Well, duh. It is called a swimming competition. Kennedy thought stupidly to herself as she got ready for Piper to yell 'GO!'
Kennedy stretched her arms and legs, cracking her knuckles in the process. Her dad taught her to do it only before a race against someone that may have a chance at beating you, for intimidation. She made it into a habit; cracking her knuckles at every swim meet she attended.
Josh's eyes widened as Kennedy also cracked her neck. She stifled a giggle, clearly amused at Josh's surprise.
"Are you ready for this?" she asked, a smirk evident on her face. Josh returned the small smile, giving her an even cockier one.
"Bring it, Stripes."
"Okay, youse! Ya ready?" Piper asked. The two nodded in answer.
"Ready, on your marks, get set, GO!" Piper shouted.
And then they were off.
Kennedy started off simple with a swift front stroke, her arms in legs in complete synchronization, her breaths short and quick. She stalled for about three seconds, seeing Josh was far behind her.
"Aussie Aussie Aussie!" she yelled out of impulse. She heard the muffled laughter of Josh as he stalled for a moment to yell out his reply.
"Oi Oi Oi!" came his response. Kennedy smiled before falling into a familiar rhythm of the butterfly. She decided to beat Josh by a long shot, instead of just by a bit. Embarrass the old sap even more.
The cold water stung on her arms, but it pushed her to move even faster. She was determined to move flawlessly yet swiftly, so her win would seem that much more epic.
Kennedy's breaths now came deeper when she emerged from the cool, dark water. She gasped for breath every stroke, her dark hair whipping around her face.
Not too long after, Kennedy reached her destination. The dock her and Josh set out on racing to. Much to her surprise, Josh was not that far behind. Perhaps two feet, give or take five. Okay, not to make Josh feel bad, but it was around fifteen feet. Still, he was closer than Kennedy expected.
"Is that all you got, Burke?" she laughed as he climbed up onto the dock, completely out of breath. Josh shook his head, breathing heavily. Drops of water flew off his brown locks, scattering all over the dock and over Kennedy. She flinched at the cold droplets.
Josh took a last breath before answering Kennedy's taunt. "I had no clue.. you could.. swim so fast!" he breathed, still completely winded. Kennedy laughed once more.
"And you call yourself a swimmer," she scoffed in mock distaste. Josh shot a dirty look in Kennedy's direction. He straightened his back and stretched out, giving Kennedy a full view of his body. She nearly gasped.
