Maverick pulled the car over and we both stepped outside. I gave Bubba a quick kiss on his head before leaving.
"I'm sorry again for cutting that awesome date short," I said, feeling genuinely sorry, but relieved to finally be away from the uncomfortable setting.
He followed me to the door and I rung the doorbell.
"Hey, can I have your number? For future reference, you know," he asked, breaking the silence.
"Sure," I replied, handing him my phone. He quickly typed in the ten digits and handed the phone back to me.
"Thanks," he smiled.
"No problem," I replied as the door swung open.
"Oh, hi, honey! Hi, Maverick! I thought that you wouldn't be home until later," my mom said, greeting us as Mikey scratched at her legs.
I felt my face slowly go red.
"I thought you wanted me to bring her home? She told me that you texted her saying how worried you were," Maverick said, confused.
"No. We wanted to let you two enjoy your meal together. We knew she'd be safe with you," my mom replied, equally confused about the situation.
"Bee?" I heard Maverick say. I turned to face him, guilty about lying. I saw that his facial expression was a mixture of confusion and hurt.
"If you didn't want to be with me, you could've just said so," he added, looking offended by my dishonesty.
"I-I'm sorry. I didn't want to ruin our day together. We were having fun," I replied, reaching out to touch his arm. I felt hurt when he stepped back and held up one of his hands, telling me to stop.
"Yeah. I guess I was having fun. I couldn't say the same for you. Goodnight Mrs. Zaveri, goodnight Phoebe," he added, making his way toward his car. I watched as he got inside and drove away.
"What was that all about, Phoebe?" My mom asked, an upset look on her face. I knew she was disappointed by my dishonesty.
"We had a little misunderstanding, it'll be alright," I replied, making my way inside the house.
"It better be. I don't want you on bad terms with that boy. I like him," she warned me.
I nodded and smiled. I saw my dad in the living room watching on the TV so I went over to him and kissed him goodnight. I did the same with my mom as I went over to place my leftovers on the kitchen table.
I made my way up the stairs and entered my room. What a crazy day, I thought to myself. I took out my phone and texted Maverick.
Hey, I'm sorry about what happened. How can I make it up to you?
I heard my phone buzz a couple minutes later.
It's ok. I don't know, I have to think about that still.
I smiled at his text, but it quickly vanished when he sent his next message.
Why did you lie about it though? And I noticed that you didn't take a single bite of your pasta. Did you not like the place? We could try some other restaurant next time if you want.
No, it's just that I was feeling a little sick, but I didn't want you to get worried or anything, so I told you that instead.
It's ok. Next time, if you're not having fun, we can go some place else. You can choose the setting for our next date. I smiled at his kind offer.
Wow. After that, I still get a second date? I think you're a keeper. I giggled and hit send.
Of course. Everyone deserves a second chance, right? Especially a girl with great character.
I smiled at his sweet reply.
I'm flattered.
_______
We talked for hours that night. We bounced from topic to topic and even made plans for tomorrow. I made him promise not to take me to another restaurant, and he promised me that he would ask me first if he ever planned on it. He told me he was taking me to a top secret location. I told him that I loved surprises and he promised me that I would love this one more than I could ever imagine.
