I lay in bed going through my various social media accounts on my phone incredibly bored. Ever since Raven left to go to Massachusetts, I had nothing to do. I had no plans, no entertainment, and no physical activity.
I have other friends, but I couldn't really connect with them like I did with Raven.
I realized that I had had enough and climbed out of bed and put on some shorts and a floral tee. I walked downstairs and made sure I told my mom that I was going out for a walk. I walked to the door and stepped outside. The warm breeze hit my face and I smiled. The fresh air felt so good. I haven't had the chance to go outside in days.
I jogged to the park nearby and slowed down to a nice stroll. I looked around and saw several groups of friends talking and laughing together while playing on the equipment. I sighed. Why can't Raven be here? I sadly thought to myself. I pushed the thought out of my head knowing that this was for the best.
I smiled and just kept on walking and admired the beautiful scenery. The trees and flowers decorated the earth with bright pops of color. I bent down to pick a flower but decided against it. "Beautiful decorations shouldn't be tampered with," I whispered to myself. I stood up and continued on with my walk.
The sunset was beautiful. The sky was a mix of pastel blues, pinks, purples, reds, and oranges. I lay on the grass admiring the sky and checked the time on my phone. It was almost 7:30 p.m. I quickly got up from the grass and began walking in the direction of my house. The sky began getting darker and darker as I walked. I hate walking alone in the dark. It terrifies me. You never know what terrors are lurking in the shadows.
I reached a sidewalk devoid of any street lamps. It was nearly pitch black. I began panicking and hugged my sides. I took a step forward and stepped right back to where I was.
"I can do this," I said rather loudly. "Do what, sweetheart?" I hear a masculine voice say behind me. I turned and couldn't make out any of his features, but I saw the outline of his figure and notice he was holding something in his left hand. He was tall. Extremely tall. He was over six foot, I know that for sure.
"N-nothing. I w-was just talking to m-my friend," I stuttered. What a horrible lie, Phoebe. Your phone is nowhere near your hand! You're so stupid! I mentally scolded myself. "Don't lie to me, sweetheart," the man warned, taking a couple steps toward me. I knew that this was not going to end well if I stayed and chatted with this man. I did the only thing that my body told me to do.
I turned and sprinted as fast as I could down the dark sidewalk. I nearly tripped on some sort of large object in my way, but I knew that if I fell, I'd probably get caught by him. I used this as motivation to try and find my inner ninja to avoid getting killed by my own stupidity.
I heard the man's heavy footsteps behind me growing closer and closer. "Where are you going sweetheart? I won't hurt you!" He called out. Yeah right, I thought. I turned into another sidewalk in a neighborhood that was lit up by street lamps. They were spaced out very far from one another causing some areas to be very dimly lit.
I saw a wall of bushes tall enough to conceal me and turned my head to check if the man was behind me. He was no longer there so I crawled behind the wall until I was sure that my entire body was concealed. I covered my mouth and nose to avoid my breathing from being heard. All that running certainly didn't help.
Suddenly, I heard a noise that caused my breathing to cease and my eyes to widen. I was frozen in fear. "Sweetheart! Where are you? I just wanna talk to you really quick! I won't hurt you! I promise!" I heard the man yell. His footsteps grew closer and closer until they stopped completely. I waited and waited until I was sure he was gone. I lifted my head slightly and was about to look around when all of a sudden, someone grabbed me by the hair and forced me upright. I screamed. I screamed as loud as I could until a hand clamped my mouth shut.
"Shut up. You're gonna wake everyone up," the man whispered in my ear. He held something up to my face and said, "You wouldn't want this to be your last night would you?" He threatened, laughing at me. I saw what was in his hand. It was a knife that looked so sharp, it could rip through me in a single stab. I started crying.
"Aw don't cry, sweetheart. Just give me what I want and I'll let you go," he said as he wiped away my tears with the knife. I whimpered, causing him to laugh at me. I realized that crying wouldn't solve this problem. I remembered Raven's request for me. She asked me to protect myself, and I would do just that.
I kicked the man in the shin as hard as I could, causing him to let me go and bend forward. I took this opportunity to knee him in the face and quickly ran away. I heard him cursing at me, but I didn't care. I'm gonna go home. I heard the heavy footsteps behind me again and I sped up as much as my body would allow, but it wasn't enough. He quickly caught up to me and grabbed my arm.
"You thought I'd let you go that easily, sweetheart? You're gonna pay for that" He warned as wiped his bloody nose with his other hand. I didn't have any strength left to run or fight or do anything. He was about to bring the knife up to my face when all of a sudden, I heard another male voice. My head whipped around and I saw a tall guy dressed in what looked to be sweatpants and a white tee shirt. I couldn't see his face very clearly, but he began approaching us, making his features known.
He had black, messy hair, light eyes, a chiseled face, and a well-built physique. He was about the same height as my offender, but he looked to be very slightly taller. He appeared to be the same age as me. He had a smile plastered on his face and finally spoke. "Hey, Lilly! I've been looking for you everywhere! Mom and dad have been worried sick trying to contact you! Who is this?" He said.
I was about to say that he was out of his mind. Didn't he see the knife this man was holding? but I realized what he was doing. He was trying to save my life.
"I called the cops, so you better run before they get here," he calmly added. The man let me go and began running in the opposite direction until the police car's sirens began blaring their familiar sound. The new guy stepped closer to me, smiled, and walked further ahead. The man was so shocked that he dropped his weapon. The boy kicked the knife away and seized the man by the arm. He dragged the man to the police car, and I heard him say, "Hey dad, I found this guy holding a knife up to some girl. He was surely about to kill her."
I was so tired and my vision began to blur, so I sat down on the sidewalk. I checked my phone and saw that it was now 9:00 p.m. and saw several missed calls from my mom and dad. I decided to text them, saying that I was ok, knowing that the police would explain it to them later.
I rested my head against my knees and brought my arms up to create a cushion and soon dozed off.
