The next day dawned bright and clear and my mood matched the tone. I even went for a run, plugging my earphones in and leaving Phillip to sleep as I puffed through 5 miles of sheer torture. By the time I reached the house I was bathed in sweat and felt like the ground was shaking under my feet.
“Good morning beautiful,” Phillip greeted me with a cup of coffee and a kiss.
“Beautiful?” Jake mocked taking in my dishevelled sweaty appearance, dodging the slap that I aimed at him.
“I’m going to shower,” I smiled and started heading upstairs running smack bang into a perfectly made up Kristina heading downstairs in what was evidently a new outfit head to toe. It was brown and cream with tinges of pale pink and I felt my jaw drop at the appearance of her new fake nails and the sheer amount of makeup she wore, it was like a carnival mask.
“Morning,” She chirped edging past me with a slight look of distaste at my sweaty appearance. She visibly lit up at the sight of Jake and Phillip leaning against the kitchen counters.
“M-M-Morning,” Jake stuttered and Phillip raised his eyebrows shooting me a slightly disbelieving look which I returned before heading upstairs and into a piping hot shower to wash off my early morning exertions.
By the time I had returned down stairs Jake had recovered his power of speech and was looking a little bit less like a stuttering school boy under the glow of Kristina’s attention, a fair bit of which, I noticed was aimed at Phillip. He was somewhat inscrutable. He was being himself but I wasn’t sure if I needed to be worried or not. I put it out of my mind as he looped his arm through mine and the little group headed towards the barn to commence the daily duties. From the minute I slipped my boot into the first stirrup of the day all thoughts of Kristina’s super-Kardashian make-over had been erased from my mind.
“He needs to be shorter, bouncier!” Phillip called and I stifled a smile and listened to his instructions. After three years I had finally learned that in the show jumping arena, Phillip was generally boss. I had to learn to separate girlfriend and pupil and he had to learn to separate boyfriend and trainer. It was getting better, slowly.
“Better?” I asked as I cantered past him as he sat on a five year old watching me.
“Yep,” he answered shortly, “Now take him over the grid.”
I nodded and pointed the young grey stallion I was riding towards the grid of bounces that was set up. Keeping the same canter, I felt him lift himself as we cantered towards it and he popped through it, answering all the questions like an old pro.
We worked him slowly, concentrating on the quality of the canter on the approach and landing. Keeping him together on the turns and making him more adjustable. Finally I dropped the reins and let him halt at the end of the arena as I watched Phillip work another youngster. He was a master, he never seemed to move and the horses just got it. It drove me mad sometimes.
