Chapter 9

My jaw dropped. I felt an intake of breath, Nat squeaked next to me and Phillip tightened his grip on my hand. There was a deathly hush and then some good mannered fellow recovered and there was a chorus of congratulations. Jake finished off with something about making Ritchie proud but I didn’t hear it. I stared, first at him, then at Kristina and then I just stared.

“Did he really just do that?” Natalie stuttered finally, she was evidently just as shell shocked as I was.

I nodded stiffly and Phillip stuttered, “I think so.” Jos and Dan were murmuring affirmatives as well so I was pretty sure it wasn’t just me who heard it.

“I think he just hijacked his fathers’ memorial to announce his engagement.” Jos said somewhat incredulously. “Who is she?” he asked incredulously, after a pause, looking around at us for some clue. “I mean, do we know her?”

“I think she’s the hot one he was talking about,” Dan replied, descending into true boy form but I was still too shocked to notice. The room’s volume levels had risen slowly again and I felt myself surfacing out of the fog of shock.

“I need to find Jake,” I mumbled and set off through the crowd before Phillip or Nat could react.

I elbowed my way through, finally arriving next to him as he stood with Kristina, receiving an elderly man’s congratulations. I didn’t bother about being polite or waiting for a break in conversation, I butted straight in.

“Jake, we need to talk.” I said quickly, grabbing his arm and dragging him through the crowd. Finally I ducked through the kitchen and pulled him out and into the back garden, turning and closing the door behind us.

 “What was that?!” I roared.

“I asked her to marry me,” He said. The reply was so simple it did my head in.

“You asked her to marry you? You’ve known her for a couple weeks! You know nothing about her!” I cried. Not giving him time to respond. “Jake what were you thinking! Why would you want to marry Kristina! What could put that idea into your head?” I knew I was shouting but I didn’t care, he had truly outdone himself in the stupidity stakes.

“You did,” He smiled, looking so pleased with himself that I had an almost overwhelming urge to hit him. “Your pep talk yesterday was so well deserved and when you said that I needed to get my life together, you were right, I do. And an important part of that is settling down and getting serious, so I asked her to marry me.”

“You did this because of me yelling at you yesterday?” I asked incredulously, not believing what I was hearing. I stood, jaw dropped silent for a long moment. “So, you asked Kristina, a girl you hardly know at all, to marry you, because I gave you a lecture on running the farm.” My voice grew louder and louder and I could feel the anger resurfacing. “Jake, wha… I… I don’t even know to say to that! That is just stupid! And I mean, did you think it through at all?! What? Marriage?!” I was stuttering out my exclamations and I knew I was staring at him like a crazy person but I didn’t care. “You proposed to a girl you don’t know, that you’ve been dating for less than a month, and you choose your father’s memorial as the perfect occasion to announce it!”
