"Avriel Benjamin Kaplan, sit down this instance!" Mum yells.
"But mum! The-"
"I said sit." She says, brandishing a spatula. I raise my hands and sit down at the dining table beside my sister, Esther. Dad winks at me and grabs a letter from the aggressive looking owl perched on our windowsill. He fishes a couple of knuts from his pocket and encloses it in the owl's leather pocket. With a rather loud squawk, it flies off. Esther looks at the parchment with excitement, and I smile into my eggs. I wolf down my breakfast as fast as humanly possible and give mum a pleading look. She sighs, waving a hand. But when she turns away, I can see she's smiling too. I take the letter from dad and look at the emerald green cursive of the front.

I turn over the envelope to see a ruby red wax seal, bearing the Hogwarts coat of arms. The Hufflepuff Badger, the Ravenclaw Eagle, the Slytherin Serpent, and the Gryffindor Lion! I rip the seal in my haste for the letter, and stare at it in awe when I finally hold it in my hands. Two pages come out, and I take the first one in anticipating hands. The same emerald ink greets me.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Dear Mr Kaplan,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find an enclosed list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins of 1 September. We await your owl no later than 31 July.

I can't contain it. I let out a whoop of joy, and dad laughs, ruffling my hair. Esther hi-fives me across the table and Mum comes around too, kissing my cheek and telling me that she's proud. I grin and start reading the next piece of paper.

1. Three sets of plain work robes (black)
2. One pointed hat (black) for day wear
3. One pair of protective gloves (dragon hide or similar)
4. One winter cloak (black, with silver fastenings)
