Emily looked around her to see if anyone was out and about. Luckily, there was no one out, so Emily turned to where Bruce was also looking around and gave him a quick nod to tell him that the coast was clear.
Bruce quickly checked behind him before walking over to Emily. He was looking around all paranoid, so when he was finally standing in front of Emily she lightly touched his arm and asked, "Is everything okay?" "Yeah, I think so," Bruce muttered as he looked around one last time before looking at Emily.
He gave her a small smile which only made Emily feel sad. She couldn't believe that Bruce was already leaving her. "Hey, what's wrong?" Bruce asked once he noticed the girl's sad expression. "It's just...you just got back and you're already leaving again," Emily whispered. "I know. I'm really sorry. I wish I could stay longer, but-" Bruce started but Emily cut him off. "But you can't. I know," Emily muttered.
"I'm just going to miss you, that's all," Emily told Bruce. Bruce gave the girl a sympathetic smile before taking her hand in his own and saying, "I'll miss you too."
Emily sighed and Bruce squeezed her hand. "Come on. Let's go," Bruce told her softly. Emily nodded in agreement and the two started walking towards the bus stop.
When they had almost reached the bus stop, Emily stopped under a tree where she then said, "Come here." Bruce gave her a confused look but didn't question her as he walked over to her.
Emily then started untucking Bruce's shirt which had been getting on her nerves. Emily knew that Bruce had been rushing this morning so he hadn't ended up tucking the shirt well. "I just wanted to do that," Emily said as she finished untucking Bruce's shirt. "Oh," Bruce whispered as he glanced up at Emily who was in close proximity to him.
Emily flattened out the shirt before looking up at Bruce and muttering, "And that hat has got to go." "What?" Bruce asked, but Emily didn't give him an answer as she quickly took the hat off. Emily noticed the slight sigh of relief Bruce let out as the hat was taken off so she asked, "It was a little tight, huh?" "Yeah, a little," Bruce admitted.
Emily then took her free hand and ran her fingers through Bruce's hair to help get rid of the hat hair. As her hands ran through Bruce's hair, Emily's eyes connected with his own. Emily brought her hand down and smiled at Bruce before gesturing to his shirt and his hair, "They look better like that."
Bruce started to smile, but as soon as the corners of his mouth twitched up, he saw some movement out of the corner of his eye. Emily noticed Bruce's change in mood, so she asked, "What is it?"
"They're here," Bruce muttered making Emily's eyes widen in panic. "We...We got to get out of here. We can-" Bruce immediately cut Emily off as he said, "Emily, look at me, look at me." Bruce tried to get the girl to look at him, but her eyes were looking everywhere but at him.
"Em."
Emily froze and looked up at Bruce. He hadn't called her Em since the day he had left. "Bruce, we've got to go," Emily said as she lightly tugged on his arm. Bruce immediately stopped her and said, "You have to go as far away from me as you can."
Emily's eyes widened and she shook her head, "W-what? No-" "Don't argue with me, just go. Go!" Bruce pleaded, not wanting any harm to come to Emily. The girl stared at Bruce for a second before slowly nodding her head. Bruce quickly pulled Emily into his embrace and kissed her forehead before pulling away from her and running in the opposite direction that Emily would be going.
As soon as Bruce started running there was a loud crash from behind Emily. Emily quickly turned to see that a bunch of military cars were running over trashcans and breaking benches as they chased after Bruce.
Emily's eyes widened as she saw a big tank making its way down the street right towards Bruce. Before Emily even knew what she was doing, her legs were suddenly carrying her towards the tank until she was standing in front of it.
Emily knew that the tank wouldn't run her over because the person inside would never let anything happen to the girl that he thought of as a daughter. "Stop! Stop!" Emily yelled and immediately the tank stopped.
The tank was a few feet away from her and she knew that he was watching her. "I know you're in there!" Emily yelled. "General, please!" There was a moment of silence before the door to the tank opened up and the General walked out.
Emily immediately ran over to Betty's father and pleaded, "General, please don't do this." The general shook his head and muttered, "You can't see this clearly. Now get inside." The General then grabbed Emily's arm and started bringing her towards the tank.
"There he is!" someone yelled making the General stop in his tracks. He was looking at something with what looked to be excitement in his eyes. Emily craned her head to see what he was looking at and she swore her heart stopped in that moment.
For there was Bruce trapped inside one of the glass corridors in the University. Each exit was blocked off by a group of soldiers and by each set of windows there were only more soldiers with guns pointing at Bruce.
The General let go of Emily and grabbed the wallow talkie that was attached to his belt. "Put two canisters in there with him," the General said. Emily watched in horror as two of he soldiers launched canisters through the windows, instantly letting a bunch of gas fill the air.
"No!" Emily yelled before she started running towards the building where Bruce was being kept. Emily could see Bruce as he quickly took off his long sleeved shirt and held it over his mouth. Her heart was beating faster as she grew closer to the scene, but just as her feet landed in the grass, someone knocked her down from behind and pinned her to the ground.
Emily let out a whimper as something in her arm popped, but she quickly shook it off and tried to get up. The soldier that had thrown her to the ground pushed her back down and held her while she squirmed.
Emily looked up and her eyes met Bruce's. His face was contorted with anger as he glared at the men that had hurt Emily. And Emily could've sworn she saw a flash of green in Bruce's eyes before he was consumed by the gas.
Everyone went quiet and the silence was deafening as they all waited to see if the gas had worked. Suddenly Bruce's hand slammed onto the window, instantly making cracks appear in the glass.
"You guys are screwed," Emily muttered with a small smirk appeared on her face.
The two soldiers looked at her confused before a loud roar rang through the air and the whole side of the corridor was smashed into pieces. The soldiers immediately got off of Emily and she stayed put, not taking her eyes off of the building where Bruce had been standing.
Emily watched as a green giant jumped out of the building and landed perfectly on the ground. The giant then stood up and glared at the General and some of the soldiers. The monster let out a big roar and Emily couldn't help but smile slightly.
Yeah, these guys were totally screwed.
