BETH'S POV

I nervously entered the double doors into the University of Michigan. My home for the next four years. I took a few steps towards the admissions desk. My mum was behind me, squeezing my hand as I spoke to the admissions lady. Gill. "Hello."

"Are you Bethany Bates?" She asked me. I nodded. "Well, I have a welcome buddy slash roommate for you. It's mandatory for all international students."

"Okay," I said. I hugged my mum one last time before she left.

"Are you ready to meet her?" Gill asked. I nodded. "Okay."

"SorryI'mlateIlosttrackoftime," a feminine voice said, a little blurry ball racing towards the desk at lightning speed.

"Lauren, I understand. You're just on time anyways," Gill said.

"Good," the girl said. She was standing up straight and I could see her. She had thin shoulder-length brown hair with dyed blonde tips and brown eyes. "Hi, Bethany, I'm Lauren. Lauren Lopez."

"Hi. I'm Beth. Beth Bates," I said, unsure of how to start and deciding to mimic her greeting.

"Well, come on. I want to show you everything!" Lauren said, taking my hand. I waved goodbye to Gill and made sure my sleeve was coving my whole arm before I took off racing with Lauren.

"So, is this the dorm?" I asked Lauren.

"Yep! We're going to be roomies!" Lauren exclaimed, sitting down on the bed on one side of the dorm. I smiled and began unpacking the things I wouldn't mind her seeing. My clothes, a few select toiletries, and other normal things. I took out my sheets and began making the bed. "You've been awfully quiet."

"Well, it's kinda weird. I'm starting college and well, I only moved from England a week ago," I said. It was sort of true. I just didn't state the details. Before coming, I had cut. It never made anything better, but it felt nice. It also made me feel faint, but it helped with my depression.

"Okay," Lauren said, eyeing my long sleeves suspiciously. I could see why. I was wearing a jumper and it was 80 degrees outside. "Are you sure you're not hot?"

"Well, a little," I admitted. Before I knew it, Lauren was rolling up my sleeves and gaping at my cuts. She must've had a strong and impulsive suspicion.

"Did you do this to yourself?" She asked.

"Um, maybe," I said, hoping she would take it as a no maybe.

"Did you or not?" Lauren asked quietly.

"Yeah," I whispered.

"Beth," Lauren addressed me. I looked up at you. "Promise me you'll never do this again."

"Okay," I said, like a deflated balloon. I looked at Lauren. "And can I help you unpack?"

"I'm good. But let's chat, get to know each other. We're going to be together for a year and maybe beyond," Lauren said. I smiled.

"Well, I'm Beth. I'm 18 and was born and raised in England. I like singing," I said.

"I'm Lauren. I'm also 18 and I've been living in Michigan all my life. I plan on majoring in musical theater," Lauren said, "And speaking of which, if you like singing, I've been seeing notices all over about a Harry Potter parody musical."
