I spot Ethan on my walk home from school.
"Hey," we say simultaneously, continuing the walk side by side.
"How's life?" he asks.
"Boring, stupid, annoying, blah," I respond.
He laughs and says, "My dad's making me get a tutor for math."
"You're kidding. How annoying."
"Yeah, so looks like my life sucks more than yours," he says.
"Ha, ha, don't think so dork." I ruffle his short, fluffy light brown hair.
"Try to deal with juggling schoolwork and pressure to be perfect," I add.
"I think it's really stupid how they expect so much from you. I mean, my parents are like that too, but at least they push me to do what I'm interested in."
"It's just inconsiderate," I agree, "consider yourself lucky."
"Well, my streets the next one, I'll catch you later," he says.
"Alright, bye..."
We exchange a hug for a moment, until then I feel him being tugged away from me.
"Hey, Wren," says a jealous Anthony, wrapping his arm around me.
"Anthony, what the hell?" I said, pushing his arm off of me.
To Anthony's surprise, he says, "Getting feisty after school are we?"
"Wow, you're the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rad, dude."
"Yeah, can you please not touch her like that?" says Anthony, motioning to me.
I groan. Where did he even come from?
"Anthony it's okay we're friends," I said, trying to keep my cool.
He ignores my statement. "This doesn't have to be a problem, just leave please."
"Okay, I'm sorry," Ethan says in defeat.
"Ethan, don't let him talk to you that way."
"Wren, I've gotta get home anyway. It was nice catching up with you...and meeting you, Anthony Kiedis. Wow. Can't believe it." And with that, Ethan's gone in a very fast flash.
I shake my head. "I can't believe you just spoke to one of my friends like that...and by the sounds of it, he was your fan."
I storm off.
He began walking at a fast pace keeping up behind me and said, "I'm sorry Wren, I just felt protective seeing another guy's arm around you."
I stop walking to turn around. "Oh I'm sorry, are we dating all of a sudden?"
He's silent.
I roll my eyes and continue walking. Maybe this guy's just another jerk who ruins his looks because of it.
"Wait," he says; I stop walking.
I sigh. "What is it now?" I quiz, turning around.
He smirks. "Why don't you like me all of a sudden, Wren...?"
"Sanchez," I finish off for him, not thinking before I told him my last name.
Dammit.
"What kind of a last name is Sanchez?" he asks curiously, leaning against a pole.
"Spanish, now if you don't mind, I'd really like to be getting home," I said, continuing to walk.
"But," he presses, walking backwards next to me, "I can't keep my eyes off of you," he sing-songs.
I'm trying to be serious, but then I let a smile go.
"I gotchu," he says, tapping my nose.
"Stop," I said in embarrassment.
He laughs. "Hey, listen, I wanna invite you to a party," he said.
"A what?"
"You heard me."
"I-"
"I'm not gonna give up."
"Clearly."
He kisses my cheek and asks, "What were the reactions today?" then trails down to my neck.
"There weren't any," I said, "I don't think anyone saw us yesterday."
"Well, there you go." He grins.
"Look smiley, my parents won't let me do anything as usual so why not just forget about it?"
Ignoring my disappointing statement, he smirks and said, "I'll pick you up this Saturday at eight."
"Get out of here, my curfew is at eight."
"Six?"
"I don't think you get it," i said, tripping over on the sidewalk but manage to keep balance. I sigh as Anthony giggles.
I think Anthony forgets that I'm a teenager with limited options. Probably more than most teens; for instance, my parents don't promote the use of condoms, they promote abstinence.
"Listen. Let me convince your parents-I've met your dad once, and plus, everyone tells me I should be a lawyer. I'll even stretch the truth a little."
"I can't lie."
No matter how much I wish I could just wipe that stupid smirk off his face, that smirk causes my heart to pump faster.
"Come on," he said. "It wouldn't be the same."
He talks to me as if we've been best friends for years.
"Fine," I said, only to get him out of my hair, for now. "You better get ready to be turned down by my parents."
I walk at a fast pace without looking back. This time, he doesn't chase me.
