I didn't want to go back.
Didn't want to see what had happened.
I couldn't tell you weren't sure either.
I had never seen you so worried.
Something pinged inside me. A feeling that had never been sparked before. It filled my bones and tickled my stomach. It made me feel a longing for someone I had never met. I bent down and picked up the small doll, quickly putting it in my backpack.
"Coming." Rory said, leaning against the door framed of the old house we had looked in.
"Yeah, sorry." I say, getting up and heading out of the house.
"Where are we heading now?" Rory asked.
"Back, hopefully." I answer.
"What if they're not there?" He asked.
"I don't know." I say, baffled by his question.
We began to venture into the outskirts of the city. We take to the roofs thinking it will be better that way. It wasn't. We were only one-third into the journey when we heard people talking. The Fireflies were making their way through the city, probably looking for some guards to kill. We tried to go as quietly as possible but the buildings were becoming more unstable.
We were crossing a rooftop when the edge of the roof gave way. Rory fell down onto the streets with the rubble. I jumped down quickly not wanting to be seen.
I peered over the edge and saw Rory getting up. He seemed alright, until he started walking. Something had fallen on his leg and he was limping.
I looked around the corner and saw the Fireflies coming towards him.
"Put your weapons down and hands in the air." They yelled, as they rounded the corner.
Rory stopped, turned around and drooped his backpack and rifle.
"Hold you fire, I'm injured." He said.
"Are you alone." The leader of the Fireflies, Mable, asked him.
"No mam." Rory stutted.
"Take the backpack." Mable, said to one of the men beside her.
Rory started to try and quietly get away, when they realized where he was going.
"Stop." Mable yelled, before shooting him in his hurt leg. He let out a yell of pain.
I winced, not wanting to see him get hurt anymore.
"I've heard that being shot hurts." Mable said to him walking over to him and crouching down beside him.
"You should know."Rory said, pulling out a shot gun from his shirt and shooting her in the arm.
God that boy was stubborn. Didn't anyone ever tell him not to fight back.
She screamed in pain, before again, shooting Rory in his other leg, causing him to curl up in a ball on the concrete, whimpering. I felt my body heat up with anger and rage.
"Don't mess with me honey." Mable said, returning to her guards. "Take him." She ordered them.
"Hey." I said, standing up so they could see me. "Aren't you looking for me." I yelled out, drawing everyone's attention to me.
"Arrow, how nice to see you." Mable said to me.
"Its my displeasure." I replied. I drew my gun quickly and started to shot the people around her.
"Now, there's no need for that." She said to me.
"If you want me you gotta catch me." I said, before jumping across the rooftops, leading them on a wild chase through the city. I slowly shot all of the guards that were with her, before cornering her down a back street.
"Please," She said, getting on her knees, "Don't kill me."
"You'll just come after me." I said, before shooting her in the head with my shotgun, causing her to fall to the ground.
I walked back to where I had left Rory. There was now some guards around him guarding him.
I pulled a smoke bomb from my pouch and threw it into the middle of the guards. I ran into the smoke with my knife and stabbed all the guards.
I picked up Rory and put his arm over my shoulder. "We gotta go."
We walk as fast as we can until we find somewhere that looks abandoned. I put Rory down and pull out my medikit, bandaging up his wounds.
"Ok done." I say.
"I can walk." Rory states, trying to get up.
"Fine." I said starting out of the building and towards home.
About an hour later we start to near where we left the girls.
"Why did you save me." Rory asked. "You could have left me but you came back."
"There are millions of ways you could have died before today, and millions of ways we could die before tomorrow." I paused hoping he wouldn't make me go on. "But we try to survive, for every minute we spend with each other." "Whether its two minutes, or two days." "I came back because I knew I might have been able to save you." "I want to know I've saved one person when I die." "I didn't want to give you up."
"So you saved me because you love me?" Rory asked.
"When you put it that way it sounds so soppy." I said.
"So that's a yes?" He asked.
"Yes." I said, before hanging me head.
"Well if it makes any difference," Rory started, "I love you too."
We kept on walking, Rory hobbling beside me.
"What do we do if their gone?" Rory asked as we got nearer to the building.
"We start towards the Safe Zone and hopefully make it."
"And what if they are there?" Rory asked.
"Same thing." I said.
We continue to the building a bit slower, stopping to investigate other shop fronts. We find some extra food to eat and some bullets.
We find the building that we left Luks and Sophie in and start up the stairs to see whats left. When we get to the top I open the door and gasp.
