Chapter  1 – Happily Ever After

I awoke to the sound of the doorbell. Just as I was getting to my feet, mum shouted up the stairs "Jessica, your friends are here!” Oh No! Today I was meant to go out with Georgia, Liam and the boys! I glanced at my clock “10:00” Of course they were right on time! I was meant to be up at 6 o’clock so I could go tend to my beautiful chestnut thoroughbred stallion – Roary.  

I yelled out “Just a minute” and ran to my closet to find my jeans and an old but nice shirt. I threw them on and ran down the stairs brushing my hair on the way.

Everyone was sitting in the lounge room. As I walked in; Louis – The joker, said “Oh, didn’t you wanna wear something nice for us?” with a wink.

I giggled and replied with “Sorry, I was a little short on time, would you guys mind helping me with Roary!?”

“Oh no... I think.. Uh...” remarked Harry, but was cut off by Liam “Sure we’ll all help you Jess!”

Georgia was happy to help; in fact she had her own gorgeous bay thoroughbred mare – Fritz. We always went riding together. It wasn’t particularly easy to start with because she used to live 10 minutes’ drive away, but her parents were sick of the city life and when they started looking for somewhere a bit quieter, I suggested Georgia talk to them about the block next door for sale. When Georgia found out she was moving next to us she phoned me straight away and by the end of the phone call we were jumping with joy.

     As we walked outside, we slipped our boots on. Off we all walked to the barn, well all of us except Louis.

“C’mon carrot boy! You might get a carrot if you help us feed Roary!” I joked with a giggle.

Louis let out a sigh and started trudging towards us. Niall laughed and yelled “Good boy!”

“Neigh” replied Louis.

When we got to the paddock Roary trotted up to the fence and whinnied.

“Hey boy, how are you? Sorry I’m late!” I whispered gently.

Louis stopped several metres behind us. “What’s wrong Louis?” Harry snorted.

After a few minutes there was a hesitant voice saying “Well, uh, guys I’m... I’m.. kind of, maybe a little bit scared of horses? And plus they eat all my carrots” Louis smiled at the end of the sentence.

Zayn replied encouragingly “C’mon Louis! There’s nothing to be scared about! Horses are actually very nice and I’m sure Roary here is the best of them considering his owner!” He gave me a wink.

I smiled back. Zayn? Liking horses? Wouldn’t have known, maybe we were more alike than I thought. And with that Louis giggled “Can I have a carrot!?” “I’m sure Roary would love to share one” and with that there was an “Ok!” And Louis ran over to us.

I handed the carrot over and whispered “Horses are beautiful, you just need to get to know them”

     Liam held his hand out and said “Ok, now let’s feed Roary! Shall I take that bucket for you?” with a wink.

“Thank you” I replied with a smile handing it to him.

I jumped the gate and clipped on Roary’s halter. “C’mon boy, we’ll bring you into the stable” I said as I led him to his stall.
