After a few hours, Finn was on heavy pain medication and Flame Prince was asleep. They said it should take a few months for Finn to heal, and that he should be under flame shield until he did so. We all agreed, of course. We knew Flame Prince still had a long way to go, so it was a small safety precaution.
I was in charge of watching Flame Prince with Finn to make sure he didn't loose his temper. He was doing really good so far, so I had some high hopes that he was in control of his anger now.
"You don't have to watch me, you know," Flame Prince said as he played with Finn's hair, "I know how to keep my anger in check now."
"How?" I asked.
"I just have to think about Finn's face when he's in pain and my flames go down."
I nodded.
"I know you're good now, but Fionna would never forgive me if I left you alone with Finn."
"Where has she been? I really want to apologize for this whole thing."
"She's been at home freaking out because you're with her brother."
He nodded.
"I hope she's doing okay."
He twisted Finn's long blonde hair between his fingers. Finn quietly groaned and moved closer to Flame Prince.
"You think his pain medication is wearing off?" He asked.
I shrugged.
"Could be."
"Humans are weird." He said quietly as he ran his thumb over Finn's palm, "How can something so soft and nice kill things?"
"I don't know. I remember humans, though. Before they were all killed."
"What were they like?"
"They were strange. They cared about material objects and ended their marriages because of fights. They were just weird."
"I wonder why they were like that."
"They have different feelings than we do. They're always stressing about death and that makes it hard to enjoy their lives, I guess."
"Finn's going to die?" He asked.
"All humans do," I said, "Their bodies get too old and just give out on them. Or they get killed."
"I guess I never thought that he would die. No one really does these days."
"Humans are different from us."
Finn stretched as he woke up. He smiled at Flame Prince.
"Warm." He said as he snuggled closer to him.
Flame Prince just chuckled.
I sat and waited for them to finish in case Flame Prince wanted to talk some more. He looked at me for a second to make sure I wasn't paying attention before kissing the top of Finn's head. I internally smiled at them. At the feeling I forced myself not to have.
Gumball walked into the room. He smiled at Flame Prince before walking over to me.
"Fionna's here."
"She cool?"
"Yeah. She understands he's a fire elemental and his emotions are wrongly attached to his powers. She wants to try and help him, actually. We think we've found a way for him to control it once and for all."
"Okay. You might have to teach him after Finn heals. I don't think you'll get him to leave."
"I didn't think I'd be able to either. My sister just wanted me to tell you."
