Chp. 3

........................

Nightkit followed Blossomkit, Thornkit, and Petalkit out of the medicine cat den to the middle of the clearing. "That was the worst thing ever! I'm not going to be a medicine cat anyways, so why should we have to know about herbs?" Petalkit complained. Nightkit muttered an agreement and Petalkit continued mewing. "I wish-."

Petalkit broke off as voices came from the bramble entrance. One of the search patrols had just returned, but something seemed off. Nightkit opened her mouth and tasted the air. That's a strange scent, she thought. Nightkit watched as six cats filed through the bramble entrance; Fallensnow with Copperfur, Oakfoot, Robinpaw, and two newcomers. Curious, Nightkit padded up them, wondering where they were from.

The first newcomer, a dark gray tom with white paws and muzzle, looked over at her. He purred and meowed, "And who would this be?"

"That's Nightkit and over there are her littermates, Blossomkit, Petalkit, and Thornkit," Oakfoot replied proudly. "Those are mine and Moonfeather's kits."

"Moonfeather," the newcomer meowed uncertainly. "Is that Moonpaw or Moonkit?"

Oakfoot purred. "I forgot that you were gone for a long time. Moonpaw. She received her warrior name quite a few moons ago, and Moonkit became a warrior just earlier today."

By that time, most cats had come to see what the commotion was, so there was quite a large group of cats around the two newcomers. Thistlestar shouldered his way through to the middle of the group. He purred and meowed, "Olive, Sweetpaw, welcome back. I assume you would like to be a warrior now Olive? And you Sweetpaw?

"I would be honored," the first newcomer, Olive, meowed as Sweetpaw nodded enthusiastically.

"Very well. There will be a clan meeting in the morning. Feel free to make yourself at home and get some rest. You're probably very tired after your long journey." Long journey? The more she thought about it, the more confused Nightkit became. By that time, Thistlestar had retreated to his den and a few other cats went to their dens also. Olive and Sweetpaw retreated to the edge of the clearing and settled down there with a few curious LeafClan cats.

"Wanna go check them out?" a cat meowed. Nightkit turned around to see Blossomkit and Petalkit milling around restlessly.

"Sure," Nightkit meowed and headed over to Olive and Sweetpaw with Blossomkit and Nightkit behind her.

Seeing many cats crowded around Olive and Sweetpaw, Nightkit decided to go hide until they all left. "Let's wait until they've all gone. Follow me," she meowed to Blossomkit and Petalkit. Nightkit led the way under a small bush a little ways from where Olive and Sweetpaw were laying, so they could eavesdrop and see when the other cats were gone.

A lot of the LeafClan warriors stayed there for what felt like a moon. Finally, when they had all gone, Nightkit burst out of the bushes with Blossomkit and Petalkit following closely behind. "Olive!" Blossomkit squealed. The dark grey tom looked up a second before the three kits all pounced on top of him.

Olive purred and stood up, shaking the three kits off of him. "What do you need?" he mewed.

"A story!" Petalkit squealed. "Please!"

"Oh, all right." Olive sat down and the three kits crowded around him. "What would you like to hear?"

"Your long journey. Where'd you come from? Why are you here now?" Nightkit meowed.

"Well, almost 9 moons ago, I was a kittypet, coming from the Twolegplace. I was completely satisfied with my life, until I met Sweetpaw over here," Olive purred affectionately. Sweetpaw purred back and Olive continued on. "So, one day, I went to see what was in the forest. Most of the kittypets or housecats, as I called them back then, had many stories about the ferocious forest cats, who killed kittypets and ate them."
