Chp. 5

.................

"What? I'm helping Darkfrost right now, but we can play later if that's what you what," Blossomkit meowed hopefully.

"Ok," Petalkit meowed glumly back to her. "That's what I was wondering. Let's play in the morning."

"Ok, sure," Blossomkit mewed with a ball of moss in her mouth. She quickly put the moss into the little hollow in the ground and jumped on it, trying to flatten it with her skills. It soon became sort of flattened and Blossomkit gazed proudly at her work. I'm going to make an amazing apprentice!

"What're you doing?" a voice grumbled. Blossomkit turned around and spotted Darkfrost gazing down at her.

"Putting new bedding in your nest," Blossomkit replied proudly.

Darkfrost peered closely at the nest. "That's not how you do it," he pointed out.

"Oh," Blossomkit mewed, crestfallen. "Would you like me to redo it?"

"No, that's okay. You can go run along now," he meowed.

"Are you sure? Because I could do more, if you wanted me to."

"No, that's fine. Go find Petalkit or something."

"Oh, okay," Blossomkit meowed and padded out of the elder's den, knowing she had failed her task. Maybe I won't be the greatest apprentice after all. Sighing inwardly, Blossomkit trotted over to the nursery, ready for a nap. Jumping on top of the moss had tired her out.

**********

"Get up." A paw poked Blossomkit in the side. "Get up, you lazy lump!"

"Go away before I claw your ears off, Nightkit," Blossomkit growled.

"But Petalkit is missing!" Nightkit whispered.

Instantly alert, Blossomkit sat up. "Wait, what?"

"Petalkit has gone missing. I don't know where she is!" Nightkit frantically whispered back.

"Did you check all around camp?" Blossomkit muttered.

"Do you think I'm mousebrained? Of course I did! She isn't in camp!" Nightkit half wailed, half whispered.

"Don't worry, we'll find her soon," Blossomkit promise and padded out of the nursery with Nightkit right behind her.

The clearing was silent and wet. Rain had fallen while she was asleep, making many mini puddles all around the clearing. The others should be returning from the gathering soon. "Should we tell another warrior?"

"Um, I-." Nightkit didn't finish, but listened intently to the movement inside the bramble tunnel. Blossomkit froze in place. Suddenly, she spotted a cats tail.

Relieved, Blossomkit meowed to Nightkit, "Don't worry. It's only the cats from the gathering." Blossomkit and Nightkit stared at the entrance to the tunnel and watched as the cats filed through. Nothing bad seemed to have happened; the cats had peaceful expressions on their faces. Almost all of them headed straight for the warriors den, a few of them stopping at the fresh kill pile on the way.

Oakfoot came in last. He seemed to be lost in thought, seeing from the expression on his face.

"Should we tell him?" Nightkit whispered.

"I think so."

"Okay, follow me," Nightkit mewed and raced up to Oakfoot. "Oakfoot! Oakfoot!"

"What's up, you little troublemakers?" he teased.
