"Good luck tonight," you said, kissing your husband goodbye before he left for his game.
"Thanks Addy," he replied, giving you another kiss. "I'll meet you upstairs after the game?"
"Sure," you agreed, and he grinned.
He headed out the door, and you went back to the bedroom to get ready for the game. You'd been to a few of his games before, and they were a lot of fun. But this would be the first game you'd be attending as his wife.
You were going with his friend Alex's wife, Leah, whom you'd become good friends with as well. You were a bit nervous since you'd only met a lot of the other wives at length most of the time, but you were excited nonetheless.
You quickly changed into jeans and a red shirt, pulling on a black leather jacket after. You put some light curls in your hair, did your makeup quickly and then hurried downstairs to get something quick for dinner.
"You look great!" Leah exclaimed, hugging you tightly.
"Thanks, so do you."
The two of you talked as you headed back out to where her car was waiting. The drive was light, and you were relieved to have someone to walk into the Wives' Room with. The other women were welcoming, but had their own conversations going on already when you arrived. So the two of you talked before settling in your seats to watch the game.

In the second period it was tied 1-1 with a little more than eight minutes to go. You really had to use the washroom, so you waited anxiously for the next whistle so you could slip out. Brendan was on the ice now, so you were distracted momentarily, but when the shot came Brendan went down into a pile against the boards. You didn't even realize the gasp until everyone was looking at you.
But he got back up. He looked hurt but he wasn't going to the bench, so you breathed a sigh of relief. But a couple seconds later, he turned around and skated back to the tunnel.
"That didn't look good," Leah whispered.
You pulled out your phone, texting him to see if he was going to have to leave.
~
Brendan: Yeah.

Great. He was in a bad mood because of it too.
"I gotta go," you said quietly to Leah. "Brendan's being sent to the hospital."
"Ok. Good luck." Her face was etched in concern. "Text me when you have any updates. I know Alex will appreciate it too."
"Definitely."

The next couple weeks were a bit...difficult. Brendan hated not being able to do simple things himself like tying a tie (he was still required to be with the team even if he had just had surgery) or his shoes, and as a result was in a bad mood about 99% of the time. You knew he didn't mean it, so you just bit back every mutter and tried to give him his space.
You were making dinner one night when you heard a crash coming from upstairs. Curious, you turned off the stove and went to see what trouble Brendan had gotten himself in this time. You walked into the room to see that he'd shoved the mirror to the side and was sitting on the floor, head in his hands as frustrated tears coursed down his cheeks.
"What happened?" you asked, and he slowly turned to look at you.
"I wanted to tie my tie by myself," he whispered like a six-year-old who'd gotten in trouble.
You sighed, but sat down next to him, pulling him closer to you. He nuzzled his head into your neck and you just held him while he cried.
"I'm sorry I've been such a jerk."
"It's ok."
"No it isn't. You're just too nice to say it."
"Don't get used to that."
You heard him chuckle and you smiled as he sat back, looking at you.
"Thanks for—everything. Especially the last couple weeks," he whispered.
"We're married. I'm stuck with you."
He laughed, kissing you gently.
"I promise I'm not always like this."
