Tony Milano drove Morey Rochester back to the deli to pick up his car. Rochester patted the wads of hundred-dollar bills he had stuffed into every pocket of his coat to assure himself they were real. His hand brushed against the gold pen sticking out from his lapel pocket and he remembered the recording device inside. Rochester realized when the tape was played back Salvatore Amato would be heard presenting him with $50,000 and he could kiss the money goodbye.
"He wasn't at all like I expected him to be," Rochester said, breaking the silence. "Salvatore Amato's actually a nice guy."
Tony grimaced. "If you cut him off in traffic he would send someone to murder you and dismember your body parts into tiny bits and pieces."
Rochester gulped. "Dunleavy told me you were our executive liaison with Mr. Amato, but in his office it sounded as if he were assigning you to the movie set. Do you work for Dunleavy or Mr. Amato?"
"I work for Amato."
"What do you do?"
"This and that; odds and ends. Bits and pieces."
Rochester fondled the 14 karat gold pen jutting out from his lapel pocket. "Then, you don't need to mention anything to Dunleavy about Mr. Amato's incentive payment?"
"That's between you and Sal. I learned a long time ago to keep my mouth shut about anything I hear or see in Sal's private office."
Breathing a sigh of relief, Rochester rolled down the car window and tossed out the pen. He watched the sun glisten off the gold pen as it bounced down the road.
"What did you do that for?" Tony asked. "That looked like an expensive pen."
"It was; but it was out of ink." Rochester tapped one of his cash-stuffed pockets. "And now I can afford a nicer one."
