The school bell rang, and it's one of those rare occasions where I'm not late. I know, bravo, hooray, me.
I close my locker and make sure I have a hold of my history textbooks and workbooks. Then I'm off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Social Studies. AKA Mr. Brunner.
Once I entered the classroom, most people were already seated. I follow my usual routine and sit alone in the far left corner of the classroom, the opposite side of the windows, where people seem to understand I want to be left alone.
The Wonderful Wizard of Social Studies tapped his desk with a pen, signalling class was beginning. I opened my books to the pages provided in Expo on the whiteboard ahead.
A few minutes after class began, I realized that one of the students typically in this classroom isn't: Jason Grace. How do I know that? He gets up in the middle of class to go to football practice, and when it came time, he didn't.
I didn't think much of it until the teacher received a phone call from the office.
"Mm. Mm-hmm... I see." he begins rubbing his beard, a worried expression toying with his usual smile. It's about five minutes of mumbling and nods before he hangs up.
"Class dismissed. Go home."
It's times like these where I just want to jump up to the sky and scream in victory at the top of my lungs.
It's time like these I don't do that. Why? Because now that I think about it, of all the time I've known Jason, he's never been absent, even when he's sick. I wait after everyone is gone to approach Mr. Brunner.
"Mr. di Angelo, what is it, dear boy?" Mr. Brunner gives me a smile.
"It's Jason, right? Or am I just making too many assumptions?" I ask. Please be the last guess.
Mr. Brunner sighs, and looks down at his folded hands. He moves around the desk, revealing he's in a wheelchair, and faces me directly.
"There's be an incident. But, I assure you, everything is fine. Now go home, Nicholas, and enjoy your day." he nods.
I nod, and turn around, but before I leave, I look over my shoulder, "I've told you. It's just Nico."
