So he tries to cheer you up, but to no avail.
Until he says the worst dad joke you have ever heard.
It made you smile the first time that night.

Off-topic, personal stuff!:
I had my first Italian lesson yeserday and it was amazing.
I loved it and the teacher was nice.
She even said that my pronouncation was fantastic. (Or fantastico 😄)
By the way I didn't have any idea what was the meaning of the sentences I read. Of course after I read them she (my teacher) helped me figure out the meaning.
My next lesson will be next week.
I am so excited about it.
