My eyes opened and stared at the blinding bright lights above me up until they were watering out of pain. I sat up and saw Wes sitting in the corner with his head on his arms. I didn’t want to think that for once in my life there was nothing to laugh about. Jail was not a happy place, especially when you are there on a false charge. I heard boots clomping around and looked beyond the bars like a caged animal. My door was opened, along with all the others on our hall. “Gym time everyone.” The guard called. We caught up with the other three and stayed behind them and out of the way of others.
We got outside and there was already guys playing basketball and lifting weights, girls doing weird yoga stuff and stretching, and some soon to be fights. Mitch went to lift weights; he was pretty impressive when it came to lifting weights. Sometimes I wished that I was stronger because then maybe I wouldn’t be such a target for the bigger guys. He was clearly starting a show and getting the attention he wanted until another guy came along and grabbed the barbell. He pushed down on it to trap Mitch and I could hear him talking, but could not make out what he was saying. He pushed it down in one quick jab and walked off, leaving Mitch barely being able to lift it back up. A couple other guys lifted the barbell up and pulled Mitch up as well.
Most people don’t understand that even though someone is in jail, it does not make them a good person. I stayed on my toes for the most part because I did not want to get into it with any of the guys here. They could most likely bench-press me because of how much smaller I am than Mitch, Danny, and Rome.
“What was that about Mitchie?” Rome asked, glaring back at the guy. “He was just welcoming me to the place. Making me feel like I’m home, that’s all.” He said this while giving Rome a nasty smile and we had figured, after being around Mitch for so many years, that Mitch was close to terrified. He knew just as well as we did that he became a target: one big, vulnerable target to be shot at.
