Lucas sighed and hung up his phone. Someone plopped down next to him and to his surprise it was Maya Hart. "Howdy."
She chuckled. "Really Huckleberry, Howdy?"
He chuckled. "Just got off the phone with Pappy Joe so I'm talking country right now. What's up?"
"I don't know. You looked weird so I came and sat. What's with you?"
He made a face. "I looked weird?" He scoffed.
Maya shrugged. "Yeah. I mean you usually look happy or something, but you looked kinda down which is weird for you."
He sighed. "Yeah, well, Pappy Joe told me-"
"Is he sick? Hurt? I like that old guy. He's okay right?" Maya panicked.
"It's okay, Maya. He is okay and he likes you too. It's just that-" He sighed again. "-I'm adopted. I found out a few years back and got upset, that's mainly why I got in so much trouble, and Pappy Joe told me that he'd find my birth parents for me. He just found them... and I don't know what to think about all of this."
Maya nodded. "Meet 'em. Even if it doesn't end well at least give it a chance."
Lucas turned to her. "You think? What if they don't like me? Or they're just bad people?"
She shrugged again. "You still have your real family to fall back on. I know someone who was adopted and I went to meet her real parents. It did not end well, but then we got some ice cream."
He blinked. "Who?"
"My mom. Turns out her birth parents hate kids. They contacted her when she grew up to get to know her and whatever, but she had a four year old so they split. Mom said it wasn't my fault and we got ice cream."
Lucas nodded. "Sounds like you have some practice with this stuff. Would you come with me to meet them?" He asked.
Maya shrugged. "Sure, why not. Where they at?"
"North Carolina. I mean ask your mom, but if she says it's okay, will you come with me?"
Maya sighed and scooted over an inch. "Uh, I don't know. Just you and me? We are kinda on pause, but still in this triangle."
Lucas nodded. "Yeah, I'll invite Riley and our friends. We can all go."
"Um, last time we all went somewhere we got sucked into this thing."
Lucas smirked. "And whose fault was that?"
Maya scoffed. "Uh, Yours. You grabbed my face, Cowboy!" She exclaimed.
"Well you freaked out when I was gonna ride the bull!" He yelled back.
"Well you could have died and I didn't want that to happen to you!"
Lucas sighed. "I was fine."
"Yeah, well, what if you weren't..." Maya said softly. "I'd, ya know, miss you and be sad and stuff."
Lucas smiled. "Thanks."
"I do care ya know. You and Riles and Farkle are like the only friends I have and I care about you guys." She admitted.
"What about Zay?"
"Who? Oh, right, him. Uh, yeah, him too."
Lucas started laughing so Maya laughed too.
Riley walked through the door and saw them laughing, she frowned.
"What's going on?" She asked sitting down on the other side of Lucas.
He turned and gave her a polite smile. "I'm going to North Carolina and I want you to come with me. Do you think your parents will let you?"
Riley smiled. "I'll ask."
Maya frowned. "Uh, I'm gonna go ask my mom. I'll give you a minute."
Riley frowned slightly. "You asked Maya too?"
Lucas nodded. "Yeah and when I see Farkle and Zay I'll ask them."
"Ask us about what?" Farkle asked with Zay coming in behind him.
Lucas looked up. "Do you guys wanna go to North Carolina with me, Maya, and Riley? I'm going to meet my birth parents and I could really use my friends." He told them.
Farkle nodded. "Sure. I'll be there for my best friend in his time of need. No problem, buddy."
Zay frowned and pointed to himself. "I'm his best friend and I'll go."
Farkle rolled his eyes.
Maya walked back over with her mother in tow.
"Mom said I can go."
"You can, baby girl, and Lucas I hope everything works out for you, but just remember the people who still love you if it doesn't." She said giving Maya a side hug.
Lucas smiled. "I will. Thank you, Ms. Hart."
"Maya, come with me to ask my parents." Riley said getting up. Maya sighed and followed her out the front door.
"So, you found your birth parents, huh?" Zay asked.
Lucas nodded. "Pappy Joe found them and Maya thinks I should meet them, and I want to. I want to know why they didn't want me."
Farkle frowned. "I'm sure they wanted you. Maybe they were too young to really take care of you so they gave you up to give you a better life with people who can."
Lucas sighed. "Yeah. You might be right, Farkle."
"When am I not?" Farkle asked grinning proudly.
"When you butted into this whole triangle mess." Zay answered earning a glare from Farkle.
