Haley noticed that Maya's attention was mostly on Lucas and Brooke so she reached out and tapped her on the arm. Maya turned back to look at her and gave her a weak smile. Haley smiled back.
"So, how long have you been in love with that boy?" Haley asked gently.
Maya sighed. "Long enough to know he'll never be mine. So how come I haven't seen you?"
Haley realized she was changing the subject and quickly figured out that she was going to change it every time, but that wouldn't stop Haley from talking about it. "We've seen each other when you were three, but our mothers had a falling out after your father bailed. Why don't you just tell him how you feel?"
Maya shrugged. "I know he wouldn't feel the same so why bother? Why did they have a falling out after my dad took off?"
"My mother always said he was a loser and your mother didn't want to admit she was right. How do you know he doesn't feel the same? Aren't you technically his girlfriend? He must have feelings for you to be dating you."
Maya rolled her eyes. "Not even. Riley saw that I liked him and she told him he was like a brother to her so that he would go out with me, but then our friend Farkle yelled out that she still loves him and now here we are, in this stupid triangle. I'm just waiting for him to pick her so I can move on in life." She shrugged.
Haley frowned. "Do you sell yourself short a lot or just when you compare yourself to your best friend?" She asked.
Maya sighed. "I don't know. Probably a lot."
Haley took her hand. "He isn't dating both of you because she is making him. He is dating you both because he has feelings for you both. I would know, my best friend Lucas, his father, went back and forth between them for years because he loved both of them and couldn't pick one. It was hetic for all."
Maya frowned. "Doesn't look like he chose her." She said pointing over to Brooke quickly.
Haley frowned. "Yes, he did. Twice." She sighed. "But Peyton wouldn't give up, so eventually Brooke did, and Lucas didn't know so he moved on from Brooke after she broke up with him and chose Peyton because she always loved him and she always told him that, even when he was with Brooke." Haley explained.
"She sounds like a bitch." Maya commented.
Haley smacked her hand. "Watch your language."
Maya rolled her eyes, but apologized. "So, does she still love him? Brooke?"
Haley sighed. "I think so, but you'd have to ask her. She claims she doesn't."
"Yeah." Maya looked over at Lucas smiling at his birth mom. "I do that."
Haley saw the blonde's eyes begin to water and she felt horrible for her.
Maya blinked and looked away, then she smiled in fake way when Riley came walking up to her.
"Hey Riles! This is my cousin, Haley James Scott." Maya introduced.
Haley shook off her sorrow for her cousin and turned to the happy brunette girl. "Hello."
"Nice to meet you." Riley smiled politely.
